TOPEKA, Kan. January 16, 2009: Another afternoon of racing from the 45th SCCA National Championship Runoffs is on tap, Monday, Jan. 19, featuring Showroom Stock B and C Sports Racing.
First, at noon (EST), SSB begins with messy incident at Corner Alpha. The Mazda MX-5 of Robert Schader, Jeff Jensen’s Acura TSX Type-S and Alan Yankielun’s Pontiac Solstice make contact, leaving two cars behind them without an escape route. Four of the five cars needed to be cleared from the area, which left the field circulating under yellow until a lap six. On the restart, polesitter Lee Niffenegger is able to pull away, as second place Chad Gilsinger and third place Michael Scornavacchi battle for position. Once Scornavacchi’s No. 25 Hoosier/Phoenix/Carbotech Pontiac Solstice is around Gilsinger’s No. 07 BFG/Traqmate Honda Civic Si, his sights are firmly set on Niffenegger. The pair are soon locked together in a thrilling back-and-forth contest. Can Niffenegger keep the No. 42 Honda/BFG/Cobalt/Traqmate Honda Civic up front or will Scornavacchi find the right place to make his move? Watch SPEED to find out.
Next, at 1 p.m. (EDT), Chris Farrell leads the CSR field to the green flag in his No. 58 C&M Manufacturing/GDR Engines/Hoosier Tire Stohr WF1 Suzuki. Farrell does not get nearly as good of a start as J.R. Osborne, however, who goes from fourth to second by Turn One in his No. 4 Rilltech/Goodyear/Redline Oil Stohr WF-1 Suzuki. Only one more lap and Osborne has Farrell covered, taking the lead in Turn Six. While it appears Osborne might have this race won, strange sounds being to emanate from his car, leaving the pit lane wondering if he’ll make it to the end. Tune into SPEED on Monday, Jan. 19, to see if Osborne will make it to the top step of the CSR podium.
