Kenney Confirms 2009 Formula ADAC Campaign
Sterling, Virginia January 15, 2009: Liam Kenney is pleased to announce that he will fly the ‘Stars and Stripes’ of his native United States of America in the 2009 ADAC Formula Masters Championship in Europe. The Virginia teenager has completed a deal to compete for Marian Hamprecht’s Ma-Con Motorsport in the eight-round series, predominantly based in Germany.
Kenney, who last year raced his way to the runner-up spot in the inaugural VW Jetta TDI Cup Series, courtesy of two wins and four podium finishes, will move to Germany to compete having first sampled the ADAC Formula Masters Championship in an end-of-season outing last October. Competing for Ma-Con Motorsport, the 16-year-old finished an impressive seventh overall at Hockenheim behind the wheel of the Dallara-built open-wheel race car powered by a 1.6-litre Volkswagen engine.
Liam returns to full-time open-wheel action for the first time since 2007 when he finished fourth overall in the Formula TR Pro Series 2000 Championship, campaigning a Formula Renault 2-litre entry. The American stand-out powered his family run entry to three wins that season from an impressive total of 12 podium finishes. Kenney’s rookie season the year before, competing in the Formula TR Pro Series 1600 Championship, netted the same number of podiums and a debut victory in Las Vegas.
Liam’s move to the European racing scene will be backed amongst others by TRAX International, who first supported the Sterling resident in last year’s VW Jetta TDI Cup Series. TRAX International specializes in engineering and software development, providing a wide variety of technical services to government and commercial clients. The association with Kenney continues as the company pursues business-to-business opportunities in European energy and engineering markets.
“We’re very excited to see Liam compete full-time in Europe with us,” stated Ma-Con Motorsport owner Marian Hamprecht. “He showed great potential when he raced for us at Hockenheim last season, beating over 20 drivers who had raced in the ADAC Formula Masters Championship all season long. Having reviewed his performance that weekend, both in and out of the car, we know Liam has the talent and ability to excel in Europe. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to sign him to our team and we believe he has the potential to challenge for the title in his rookie season.”
Liam is equally excited about the opportunity to represent the United States over in Europe.
“I have to thank Marian Hamprecht and Ma-Con Motorsport for the chance to race in the ADAC Formula Masters Championship,” enthused Kenney. “Similarly I’m delighted to be going to Europe with backing from TRAX International. For a driver of my age this is a great chance to compete with some of the world’s best up-and-coming drivers. I thoroughly enjoyed my first race in Germany last October and I’m looking forward to a full season’s testing and racing to give me the best shot at winning races. It’s great to continue an association with Volkswagen having raced in the Jetta TDI Cup Series last season. I’m looking forward to returning to the cut and thrust of open-wheel racing and flying the ‘Stars and Stripes’ proudly!”
Liam begins testing in Spain in February after supporting the Jetta TDI Cup driver selection event at Infineon Raceway. Season preparations continue in Germany in March before the first race in April.
