GM India Bags the Prestigious National Energy Conservation Award - 2008

NEW DELHI, India – December 16, 2008: General Motors India has won the second prize in the Automobile Manufacturing Sector at the National Energy Conservation Awards 2008 for energy conservation at its manufacturing facility in Halol in Gujarat. The award was conferred by the Minister for Power, Mr. Sushil Kumar Shinde at a function held in New Delhi on Sunday.

On receiving the award, Mr. P. Balendran, Vice President, GM India said, "This award marks our commitment to optimize the use of all natural resources and help protect the environment through the implementation of best practices in our manufacturing units. The award scheme has motivated units like us to undertake serious efforts in saving energy and environment. Going forward, we intend to apply more energy efficient processes in our manufacturing facilities to improve the existing benchmarks."

GM India achieved this feat by a 360 degree approach to energy conservation where improvement in general utilities, production processes etc were backed by active participation from the employees. It has made plans upfront during the design stage itself and installed devices that can contribute to conservation of energy in terms of all its processes including lighting system, compressed air system, air conditioning system, paint process equipment and technology improvement.

The award instituted by Ministry of Power and the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is given in recognition of industrial units demonstrated commitment to energy conservation and efficiency. The award committee consists of members drawn from the Ministry of Power, Central Electricity Authority, National Productivity Council , Confederation of Indian Industry, Ministry of Railways and from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. The committee critically evaluate the nominations on various parameters the winners are selected based on the achievements recorded in terms of conservation of energy.
