Change at the Head of the Renault Board of Directors

Today at the Renault Board of Directors, Louis Schweitzer, Chairman of the Board of Directors, confirmed that he would not seek the renewal of his mandate as a Director at the Annual General Shareholders Meeting on May 6th 2009.
At this point, it will be proposed to the Board of Directors an evolution concerning the governance. Carlos Ghosn would be named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer and additionally to his current functions, he will become Chairman of the Board of Directors.
It will be proposed to the Board of Directors to present at the Annual General Shareholders Meeting the appointment of an independent Director with a broad international experience. This nomination would increase the number of independent Directors among the Board.
At the meeting, the Board members expressed their appreciation to Louis Schweitzer for his work during the 17 years first as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Renault until 2005 and then as the non executive Chairman of the Board.
Louis Schweitzer was born in July 1942 in Geneva. He is a graduate of the Paris Institut d'Etudes Politiques and the Ecole Nationale d'Administration. He was Inspector of Finance in 1970 and Chief of Staff under Prime Minister Laurent Fabius in 1981. He joined Renault senior management in 1986, becoming Chief Financial Officer and Head of Strategic Planning in 1988. He was appointed Executive Vice President in 1989 and Chief Operating Officer in December 1990. He was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Renault from May 1992 to April 2005 and President of the Renault-Nissan Alliance Board from May 2002 to April 2005. In March 2005, he was named President of the “Haute Autorité de Lutte contre les Discriminations et pour l’Egalité” (HALDE) by the President of the French Republic for a mandate of 5 years. Louis Schweitzer is Chairman of the board of Astra Zeneca and is a board member of BNP Paribas, AB Volvo, Veolia Environnement and L’Oreal. He is Chairman of the supervisory board of media group Le Monde. Louis Schweitzer is Commander of the Legion of Honor and Grand officer of the National Order of Merit.
Carlos Ghosn was born in Brazil in March 1954. He graduated with engineering degrees from École Polytechnique and from École des Mines de Paris. He worked with Michelin for 18 years first as Plant Manager in Le Puy (France). He became the Chief Operating Officer of Michelin’s South American activities based in Brazil before being appointed Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Michelin North America in 1989. He joined Renault as its Executive Vice President in 1996. In addition to supervising Renault activities in the Mercosur, he was responsible for advanced research, car engineering and development, car manufacturing, powertrain operations and purchasing. Mr. Ghosn joined Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. as its Chief Operating Officer in June 1999 and was named Chief Executive Officer in June 2001. President and CEO of Renault since May 2005, he remains Co- Chairman, President and CEO of Nissan. Carlos Ghosn currently serves on the boards of directors of Alcoa and AvtoVAZ.
