Washington DC October 15, 2008; The EPA and U.S. Energy Department yesterday issued the 2009 fuel economy guide which is dominated by international makes.
The overall fuel economy leader is still the Toyota Prius, rated at 48 mpg in the city and 45 on the highway.
The smart car, which arrived in the United States last January too late for the 2008 guide now holds down the No. 5 overall MPG spot with ratings of 33 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
The Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesels were not in the market last year because they were being tested for 50 state tighter clean air rules. They passed and are back for sale in the U.S. market this year with improved emissions controls.
The Jetta TDI Diesel Sedan and Jetta Sportswagen TDI Diesel Wagon with manual transmissions are listed in seventh place overall with ratings of 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
Bringing up the bottom, among all makes and models, is the Lamborghini Murcielago, rated at 8 mpg city and 13 mpg highway (Ed. note: But who cares?.
