Bosch Powers Audi Clean Diesel Across the U.S. and Around the World

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., October 16, 2008: A 4,800 mile real-world test track is showcasing the capabilities, fuel efficiency and low-emissions system of the 2009 Audi clean diesel Q7 3.0 TDI. As more than 184 drivers travel across the country in the new vehicles, they will experience the Good, Clean, Fun of the diesel common rail system and other components supplied by Robert Bosch LLC.

The Audi Mileage Marathon began in New York on Oct. 5, and will conclude in Los Angeles on Oct. 20. Drivers representing countries in North America, Europe and Asia are driving the fuel-efficient vehicles in 13 daily stages, during which they will experience the confident sportiness and extraordinary efficiency of Audi's TDI models.

Bosch, the worldwide leader in powertrain development, was selected by Audi to supply the common rail system that includes the electronic control unit (ECU), rail, pump and injectors, the dosing module and control unit for the Denoxtronic system, as well as various sensors for powertrain and exhaust gas aftertreatment in the Q7 3.0 TDI. The Denoxtronic reduction-agent metering system from Bosch permits further reductions in the emissions of diesel engines. It is a central component of the SCR system (Selective Catalytic Reduction).

Clean diesel technology combines clean diesel fuel, advanced engines and effective exhaust control technology into a complete package that is more efficient, environmentally friendly and fun to drive. Today, a clean diesel engine is one of the "greenest" powertrain options on the market.

Diesel is good because it provides 30 percent better fuel economy than a comparable gasoline engine, translating into more miles per gallon and fewer trips to the pump. At today's prices, this fuel economy advantage more than offsets the price differential between gas and diesel fuels.

This week's national average fuel prices are $3.15 for regular gas and $3.66 for diesel. With diesel's better fuel economy, it is like paying $2.56 a gallon for diesel -- which is equivalent to $0.59 less per gallon compared to gasoline fuel.(1)

Diesel is clean because it has approximately 25 percent less greenhouse gas emissions than comparable gasoline engines.

The Q7 3.0 TDI will be one of the first clean, highly-efficient, seven-passenger SUVs, available in the U.S., combining the power and capacity consumers expect in an SUV with notable fuel efficiency and ultra-low emissions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimate of 25 miles per gallon on the highway provides the Q7 3.0 TDI with a highway driving range of more than 600 miles per tank of fuel, far more than a comparable gasoline-powered vehicle. The Q7 3.0 TDI also provides 406 lb-ft of torque, more than exotic sports cars.

Bosch has been promoting the benefits of clean diesel in anticipation of the new 50-state compliant diesel powered vehicles, such as the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI, coming to market in the U.S.
