A conceptualization of what the American automaker landscape may look like in the near future*

AUTO CENTRAL - October 12, 2008: Two new intriguing stories have surfaced this weekend on the heels of the announcement that General Motors and Chrysler have had merger conversations.

The first story, attributed to the Wall Street Journal states that Ford is trying to sell its majority ownership in Mazda. This seems like a bad move since Mazda's impact on the Ford line is one of the few brights spots in Ford product.

The second story, according to Reuters, is that GM actually approached Ford about a possible merger, before they began talks with Chrysler. According to the Reuter's story Ford declined the offer.

* A result of the "last" great depression was that many of the smaller car companies went under or were swallowed up by the Big Three. This great depression - and we are in the midst of a great depression regardless of some man-made definition that doesn't pertain to current conditions - may ultimately result in the merger of not just GM and Chrysler or GM and Ford, but the union of General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. To this end, we suggest the adoption of the old name and last logo used by the combination of Rambler, Nash and Hudson: American Motors. Why use this name and logo? Simple, if GM-Ford-Chrysler were to come to pass, you know that they would go out and wastefully spend tens or even hundreds of millions of dollars trying to develop a new name and logo. If they simply bought the right to the AMC name and logo they would save all that time and money and put it to better use in actual products.

Hey, it's just a suggestion.
