Kenney Up for New Jersey Double-Header

Sterling, Virginia September 25, 2008 – New Jersey Motorsports Park plays host to the only double-header meeting in the inaugural 2008 VW Jetta TDI Cup Series with Rounds 6 and 7 set for Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th September. Virginia’s Liam Kenney hopes to use the New Jersey double to break back into the top-five in the Driver Standings ahead of the season finale at Road Atlanta next weekend, Friday 3rd October.

The 16-year-old Sterling resident recorded his fourth straight top-ten finish last weekend in Round 5 at Iowa Speedway but he dropped to seventh overall in the points, on 107 markers, having been penalized by officials post-race – his fighting sixth place finish at the checkered, having driven superbly to climb from 13th on the grid, later reduced to a disappointing ninth place classification.

Keen to move on, Liam, who races the #35 ViON/Trax International 2009-spec clean diesel Jetta TDI, is hoping for a more productive outing at the all-new, 2.25-mile Millville-facility.

“I have to say I’m really looking forward to this weekend’s double-header,” said Kenney. “I’ve looked at the track layout and there’s a real similarity with California’s Willowsprings Raceway, which is a circuit I’ve had some success at. That could be a good thing as this series is so tight, everyone’s really racing on top of each other! It can be difficult to keep your nose clean if you’re looking to move forward in the field. Unfortunately, of-late I’ve found myself having to make up large qualifying deficits due to being sick and a tire delaminating issue at Lime Rock and again with the tires last weekend at Iowa.

“I’ve proved you can pass for position but there’s no doubt qualifying is really the be-all and end-all to challenge for wins in a series as close as this and with the numbers on the grid. If you can qualify top-five, which I’ve done, then you really have a great shot in the race. The series really does provide good, close racing and that’s definitely a positive thing. This weekend’s double-header is a big deal, there’s a lot at stake in terms of points heading into next weekend’s finale at Road Atlanta.”
