TALLADEGA, Ala. – The Laps for Life Blood & Marrow Drive at Talladega Superspeedway collected 232 units of blood and 55 bone marrow registrants on Thursday, bringing the three year total to over 550 units of blood collected and over 200 bone marrow donors registered.
Blood donors and bone marrow registrants were treated to track rides around Talladega Superspeedway in Dodge Charger Pace Cars, tours of the track and International Motorsports Hall of Fame and Museum, drawings for door prizes, goody bags and much more.
“On behalf of Talladega Superspeedway I would like to thank everyone who participated in Laps for Life,” said Talladega Superspeedway President Rick Humphrey. “Without the support of the donors, race fans, sponsors and organizations like the American Red Cross and the National Bone Marrow Donor Registry, events like this wouldn’t be possible. We are already looking forward to next year’s event and new elements we can add to make it an even greater success.”
“We, at the American Red Cross, are once again amazed at the generosity of Talladega Superspeedway and their loyal NASCAR Fans,” said Mark Beddingfield, CEO of the American Red Cross Alabama & Central Gulf Coast Blood Region. “People from all over the United States, including Hawaii, joined us for this life saving event and the great hospitality that Talladega Superspeedway provides. It was a fun and successful day that will touch the lives of many hospital patients.”
Talladega Superspeedway Laps for Life: A Blood & Marrow Drive for Alabama, began in 2006 as part of a nationwide effort among multiple tracks.
The NASCAR Foundation, in partnership with the American Red Cross, Hendrick Marrow Program and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation announced in June 2006 at Michigan International Speedway that it would build upon MIS’s annual Spirit of America 500 Blood Drive by providing unique experiences at many different tracks that bring out the goodwill and community pride in all race fans. In addition to giving blood, fans are also encouraged to join the National Marrow Donor Program’s Registry of volunteer marrow donors. Every day, thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases that could be treated with a marrow transplant are searching the Registry for a donor.
