Six Tips to Help Switch to a Small Car

Washington DC September 16, 2008; The AIADA newsletter reported that in light of rising gas prices, as consumers switch from gas guzzlers to smaller, more fuel-efficient rides, they are faced with a new conundrum: how can they make a smaller car work for their needs?

MSNBC, along with car owners who have made the change, has compiled some helpful tips on how to survive vehicular downsizing.

First of all, reconsider what's essential. Scott Gutterman of New York City, who recently went from a Jeep Grand Cherokee to a Honda Accord, found that he didn't need to keep lawn chairs, towels, antifreeze, and a walker for his inlaws in his car.

"It's not a place for storage anymore," he said. "Now we have to keep it clean." Also, utilize the outside of your new car. If you need to carry skis, kayaks, surfboards, or bikes install a roof rack. It also can hold a cargo box, bag, or basket.

Perhaps most importantly, consumers should choose their smaller car wisely. Do your research and be realistic about your needs. Check whether the car can pull a trailer, if that's something you are going to need, said Jon Alain Guzik, editor-in-chief of DriverSide.com.
