Shanghai, July 15, 2008; The sales of Shanghai Volkswagen hit 44,618 units in June, leading China's passenger vehicle sales in that month, according to the latest industry statistics. The carmaker's rapid sales growth amid fierce competition is mostly attributed to the newly launched Lavida model.

The June sales rankings issued by the China Passenger Car Association show that Shanghai VW tops the list by selling 44,618 vehicles in June, up 16.13% month-on-month, followed by Chery Auto with 37,994 units, Shanghai GM with 37,921 units and FAW VW with 36,387 units. Shanghai VW sold a total of 272,009 vehicles in the first half of this year.

Industry experts said that the several factors that have contributed to the growth of Shanghai VW's sales in the off-season include the improvement in the product quality, marketing and services, the all-out rally of its Santana series, and mostly importantly the recent launch of its new self-developed Lavida model.

The Lavida model, developed and produced by Shanghai VW, has secured over 30,000 orderings in less than two months and new orders are flooding into its 4S stores, which started on June 26 to deliver the car to buyers. Obviously, Lavida is driving up Shanghai VW's rapid sales growth.

A total of 517,469 passenger vehicles were sold in China in June, up 13% year on year, but down 1.3% from May.
