Gilles Michel, Executive Vice President of Citroën has won European GreenFleet’s ‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award 2008, for his contribution to the automobile industry.

The inaugural event, which took place on World Environment Day, at the HUSA President Park Hotel in Brussels, recognises efforts by private and public sector organisations to reduce the environmental impact of motoring across Europe.

GreenFleet’s Colin Boyton said, "We felt that Mr Michel was a deserved winner of this Award, due to the key strategies he has overseen in the development of different technologies within Citroën. As a direct result of this, Citroën has won our Car Manufacturer of the Year Award for the last two years, here in the UK. This really is some achievement, considering the opposition.”

Mr Michel was especially commended for his part in the introduction of the Company’s Stop and Start system, which is available on C2 and C3 models. This technology stops the engine when a car is stationary and starts it again when pressure is removed from the brake pedal, reducing fuel consumption and CO² emissions by up to 15%.

The Company also boasts a range of fuel efficient and stylish cars, with 24 models returning CO² emissions of 120g/km or less. The nimble C1 city car emits just 108g/km CO² and can achieve up to 74.2mpg, whilst the family-sized C4 with EGS produces a minimal 120g/km of CO².

Citroën is renowned for its ongoing commitment to the development of environmentally conscious technology, with concept cars such as the eco-friendly C-Cactus, soon to be making its UK debut at the 2008 British Motor Show. With its intelligent diesel hybrid engine and minimalist design, this innovative concept is made from recycled materials and highlights the dedication the Company has towards the design of greener cars.

The award was presented by Malcolm Harbour, MEP - UK West Midlands Region and Ms. Alenka Burja from the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, Slovenia.
