DEFENDING SPRINT CHAMP LEVI JONES
EYES 2 RACES AT GAS CITY & WINCHESTER'S "VOGLER CLASSIC'
Defending USAC National Sprint Car Champion Levi Jones of Avon, Ind. opens his title defense this weekend in three back-to-back races in Indiana. He's trying to become the fifth driver to own at least three series crowns. The others are Steve Butler (4), Robbie Stanley, Sheldon Kinser and Larry Dickson.
Jones won the 2005 and 2007 championships and returns to anchor the Tony Stewart Racing team with teammate Tracy Hines. Hines is back in the title chase after sitting out most of 2007 with leg injuries.
As City I-69 Speedway hosts Friday and Saturday night events, while the 18th Annual "Rich Vogler Classic" is on tap Sunday afternoon at the Winchester Speedway.
Jon Stanbrough won two of last year's three USAC Sprint contests at Gas City, while Daron Clayton won the other. Marc Jessup is the defending champion of the "Rich Vogler Classic."
Jones' track record at Gas City is pretty impressive. Last year he finished second twice and third once in three appearances at the 1/4-mile dirt oval. He also was the fastest qualifier once. At Winchester last year Jones finished eighth.
Former "Rich Vogler Classic" champion Dave Darland is also among top threats for victory this weekend.
