AVL Solutions Spur Southeast Michigan Growth

PLYMOUTH, Mich., April 14 -- AVL, a global provider of solutions in powertrain engineering, simulation software, and instrumentation and test systems, is expanding with additional capabilities, facilities, and employees in Southeastern Michigan, where North American operations are headquartered. In response to customer demand, AVL has doubled its size within the past five years, growing from 200 regional employees to over 500 today, with the intention of doubling that number in five years.

This significant business expansion includes the addition of an advanced battery testing facility capable of handling three battery systems simultaneously. It was installed, commissioned, and is now running at full capacity on customer programs. Additional test cells allow for comprehensive non-firing powertrain testing of engine components and subsystems. Environmental testing has also been added for extreme capability deep thermal fluids testing and cold start testing. In addition, to satisfy customer requirements, prototype small-volume engine-assembly capability has been added too.

"AVL expansions in North America allow for extensive and advanced hybrid battery testing by utilizing our expertise in powertrain engineering and simulation testing," Don Manvel, chairman and CEO, AVL Americas, said. "What makes this unique is our ability to test multiple batteries, components and mechanisms simultaneously."

To supplement AVL's business, client, and personnel growth, AVL has opened a new testing center in California to work closely with west coast energy leaders. With plans for continued expansion in Michigan and other states, AVL is playing a major role in making the United States a world leader in optimized powertrains through advanced methodologies of technology development, simulation, and testing to meet future demands.

AVL is the world's largest privately owned and independent company for the development of gasoline, diesel and alternative fuel powertrain systems, as well as fuel cell and hybrid technologies. The company offers combined solutions of powertrain engineering, simulation software and testing and instrumentation systems. AVL's North American Headquarters is located in the Detroit suburb of Plymouth, Michigan. For more information, AVL can be found at www.avl.com .
