Mindy’s NHRA Minute
Rookie Driver Picks Up First Win
_________________________________________________________________________
Brownsburg, Ind. (March 31, 2008) – In only his fourth professional Top Fuel
start, Ringers’ racer Antron Brown landed in the POWERade Drag Racing Series
Winner’s Circle collecting his first Wally for the class.
Brown, formerly a Pro Stock Motorcycle rider, is no stranger to the NHRA
Winner’s Circle. During his 10-year career in motorcycles, he collected 16
Wally trophies. On Sunday, he became the first driver in NHRA series history to
win in both the Top Fuel and Pro Stock Motorcycle classes.
On the way to his first Top Fuel win, Brown defeated Doug Foley, Cory
McClenathan, Doug Kalitta and powered by fellow Ringers’ team supporter Larry Dixon
in a very close race, 4.605-seconds/320.28 mph to 4.621-seconds/309.06 mph.
The win was an extra special moment for Brown and his Matco Tools dragster
team, as he gave team owner David Powers a win in his hometown of Houston.
The win boosted Brown to third in Top Fuel point standings.
Two Ringers’ supporters battled for the O’Reilly NHRA Spring Nationals
title in the Pro Stock category Sunday afternoon, No. 1 qualifier Kurt Johnson
and current point leader Greg Anderson.
The weekend didn’t turnout to be a sweep for KJ as his ACDelco Chevrolet
Cobalt jerked hard right off the launch. Anderson sailed onto his 53rd career
win, 6.692-seconds/207.37 mph.
One racer was able to make a sweep on the weekend, making him the second
rider in a row to do so in 2008 in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category.
Reigning bike champion Matt Smith picked up the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike
Battle low qualifier award in pre-race ceremonies on Sunday and capped off his
weekend with a 7.060-second/187.76 mph run to Gainesville low qualifier and
winner Matt Guidera’s 7.140-second/185.03 mph run.
Guidera still sits atop the Pro Stock Motorcycle points with a 17 point
margin over Smith.
A couple racers who support the Ringers Gloves contingency program picked up
Wally’s in their respective classes in Lucas Oil Sportsmen action; reigning
Super Comp champion Shawn Langdon in Super Comp and Jimmy Lewis in Super Gas.
The NHRA heads to Sin City two weeks from now, April 10-13 for the
SummitRacing.Com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
