GM Wins 1st Green Leaf Award at NY Auto Show*
Manhattan, New York - Victor Mooney, 43, of Queens, is a little closer to
his dream of making a second attempt to row 8,000 miles from Senegal to New
York's Brooklyn Bridge for the global awareness of AIDS and the Environment
on December 1, 2008. As a recipient of the 2009 Green Leaf Award, General
Motors is recognized for their commitment in reducing greenhouse gases and
smog-forming pollutants through their hybrid automobile – Chevy Tahoe.
South African Arts International has selected The Chevy Tahoe Hybrid to tow
Mooney's "Green" new ocean rowboat named "The Spirit of Zayed" from Maryland
to New York City. The vehicle will also be featured prominently on
www.goreechallenge.com. Website viewers will be encouraged to take a test
drive of the Tahoe Hybrid at particapating U.S. dealerships during Mooney's
mission across the Atlantic Ocean.
"The AIDS crisis has also been devastating to the environment, particularly
in sub-Saharan Africa. If you can't row the Atlantic, you can still help by
driving an eco-friendly car", says Mooney at the NY Auto Show. Mooney has
lost one brother to AIDS and has another that's HIV+. He's a public affairs
officer for ASA Institute and executive director of South African Arts
International. When successful, he will be the first African-American to row
across the Atlantic Ocean.
