Sprint today announced the expanded role of Steve Gaffney as marketing director for all aspects of the company's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series sponsorship. Gaffney, who has played an integral role in the series sponsorship since Nextel and NASCAR began the partnership in July 2003, will oversee one of the most important marketing partnerships in professional sports.

"Sprint and NASCAR enjoy a strong and thriving partnership, and Steve's deep and historic understanding of the relationship will create new opportunities for success under his leadership," said Tom Murphy, vice president of marketing for Sprint. "With this year's launch of NASCAR Sprint Cup MobileSM and the unique branding and advertising we've put behind the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, we are passionate and focused on bringing race fans closer to the sport through Sprint technology and innovation."

As a director working on the NASCAR sponsorship, Gaffney's current responsibilities include development and execution of the national marketing strategy, sales and consumer promotion platforms, as well as employee initiatives. In his new role, he also will manage Sprint's interests within the NASCAR community including teams, drivers, tracks, media and the sanctioning body. Gaffney will continue to direct Sprint's other sports sponsorships including the National Football League, Sprint Center and the US Ski and Snowboard Association.

Dean Kessel, who has overseen the NASCAR sponsorship since May 2006, leaves Sprint on April 4 to assume the role of president of the Victory Junction Gang Camp.

"Dean has done an amazing job leading our efforts over the past two years, and we look forward to continuing to work with him through Sprint's relationship with the Victory Junction Gang Camp," said Murphy.
