Telit to Unveil Four New M2M Modules, Updated Product Portfolio at Mobile World Congress
BARCELONA, Spain--Telit Wireless Solutions, Inc., the US-based m2m mobile technology arm of Telit Communications (AIM:TCM), is presenting a wide range of new and updated modules at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona (3GSM). Telit will introduce the new WA100-DUAL, a Wi-Fi accessory to the GE863-PRO3, as well as the GE864-Auto which is based on the well proven GE864 module and tailored to the special needs of the automotive industry. Furthermore, Telit will showcase the GE863-SIM with integrated SIM card as well as the UMTS/HSDPA module UC864 which is now available in three versions. By using these innovative modules, Telit customers can benefit from cutting-edge M2M technology and reduced integration costs.
WA100-DUAL is a dual-mode Wi-Fi short range wireless companion product to the PRO3 device family. This innovative BGA (Ball-Grid-Array) module incorporates a complete 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi device into a small 25 x 25 mm form factor. It works in conjunction with the GE863-PRO3 and provides the software drivers running on the GE863-PRO3. Based on the processing power of dual 60MHz RISC processor cores, the WA100-DUAL is a versatile addition to any GE863-PRO3-based design, instantly adding the power of Wi-Fi communications and the versatility of the SDIO interface. This offers customers lower integration costs and faster time to market.
Furthermore, users benefit from the advantages of the GE863-PRO3 module. Thanks to its integrated ARM9 processor, software applications can take full control of the CPU while the GPRS-based band processor handles time critical communication tasks. The powerful ATMEL ARM9 processor at the heart of the system enables control of real time applications that require up to 200 MIPS. Therefore, the module is ideally suited for applications requiring high processing power. The GE863-PRO3 module can be programmed in Python and C/C++ programming languages affording flexibility and choice in development of the end user application.
Enhanced advantages for fleet management applications
Thanks to the integration of the Wi-Fi technology, the WA100-DUAL is especially well suited for fleet management applications. They need wireless connectivity at the loading dock for their handheld or scanning devices, such as inventory management or for messaging to the truck itself. This short range connectivity will be provided by Wi-Fi technology. When the vehicle leaves the loading dock it needs wide area networks such as GPRS to ensure a communication between the truck and the logistics center.
The new module will be available at the end of the second quarter 2008. It will be the first module in a series of companion products to the GE863-PRO3. A range of other modules with complementary short range communication technologies such as Bluetooth and ZigBee will follow.
GE863-SIM: Supporting the customers and network operators
Another highlight at the Mobile World Congress 2008 will be the GE863-SIM with an integrated SIM chip which replaces the external SIM card and the SIM card holder. Telit's customers will benefit from the SIM’s improved reliability, considerable cost savings and efficiency in the development and production of their M2M solutions. Because the integrated SIM chip has to be programmed according to the network operator, Telit will support and consult its customers and their network providers to develop special modules for high volume applications. Thus, the GE863-SIM is a module individually tailored to the customer’s needs and manufactured on request. Individual conditions are subject of discussion between Telit, the customer and the network operator.
UC864 customized for specific geographic markets
Three versions of the UC864 UMTS/HSDPA module, which will be available worldwide after January 2008, were developed for different geographic markets. The UC864-E is a single-band UMTS and quad-band EDGE module. It enables extremely fast data transfer of up to 7.2 Mbit/s at 2100 MHz.
The UC864-G is a tri-band UMTS (850/1900/2100 MHz) and quad-band EDGE product. The module was developed for global use and works in European as well as in North American systems.
Additionally, Telit will present the UC864-K, a UMTS single-band (2100 MHz) module, which is tailored to meet the requirements of the South Korean market and is currently available. Users can integrate Telit's UC modules into existing GC and CC-based GSM/GPRS and CDMA designs with minimal integration and adaptation requirements.
GE864-Auto: tailored for the automotive market
Recent demand in the auto industry calls for rugged devices for integration into vehicle electronics. Telit has developed the GE864-Auto to meet the needs of this harsh environment while maintaining compatibility with its broad range of GSM/GPRS modules. The GE864-Auto is the perfect module for incorporating the European eCall functionality. The module features Telit’s new Firmware Update Service and is based on the Telit GE864 module, which is currently the world’s smallest GSM/GPRS quad-band module with BGA. The module can withstand extreme temperatures ranging from -22 to +185°F (-30 to +85°C).
The use of the GE864 subcompact form factor allows the integration into cars and other applications requiring an extended operating temperature range and mechanical ruggedness within the ever-shrinking space inside electronics bays in trucks, cars and other mobile platforms. The BGA package provides a very low profile in the integrated solution while at the same time enhancing the mechanical resistance to shock and vibration which are typical for these applications. The elimination of connectors afforded by the BGA concept also reduces costs compared to conventional mounting methods. The GE864-Auto will be available after the end of the second quarter 2008.
