2008 INTERNATIONAL WHEEL AWARDS
THE COMPETITION
The International Wheel Awards honor the best in coverage of the automotive industry.
The competition was established by the 42-year-old Detroit Press Club Foundation, in line with its charter to encourage excellence in journalism.
Cash prizes and trophies, including a separate Golden Wheel award, are presented to the print, broadcast, news service and Internet journalists whose work is judged the best among all entries.
ELIGIBILITY The International Wheel Awards competition is open to all journalists, editors and producers.
GENERAL INFORMATION
• All material must have been published or aired during the Calendar Year 2007. • Foreign entries, both print and broadcast, must include English translations. • Deadline: Entries must be postmarked no later than Friday, February 15, 2008. • Entrants may submit entries in one or more categories; however, an entry MAY NOT be entered in more than one category. • All entrants will be notified of results. • The entry fee is $75 (US) per entry. Multiple entries from one source may be covered by a single check for the total amount. • A series will be considered a single entry if labeled as a series at the time of publication or broadcast. • Each entry must be accompanied by two copies of: (1) the completed entry form and (2) a statement of not more than one page describing the entry and the effort involved in its preparation for publication or broadcast. Photocopies are acceptable. • Freelance entries must indicate where the material was first published or broadcast. • Entries without category designation will be disqualified. • All entries become the property of the Detroit Press Club Foundation and cannot be returned. • Finalists will be notified prior to the May 2008 awards presentation at the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, MI.
ENTRY DETAIL
PRINT – Entries may be photocopies or originals; pages should be fastened together. Flexible folders or binders are acceptable. Submission of entire issues in any category will be disqualified. Newspaper magazine supplements must be entered in newspaper categories. Do not mount entries on boards.
WIRE/NEWS SERVICE - Entries must have been distributed in Calendar Year 2007.
INTERNET - Entries will be accepted from journalists who are employed by, and writing or shooting for, media that are hosting the Web site on which the entry is presented. (A freelancer working under contract with a publisher or broadcaster will be considered employed by that company for purposes of submitting an entry. However, entries can be accepted only when submitted by the company.) Each entry must be printed out and presented as published on the Internet. A diskette or standard CD can accompany the entry to help demonstrate layout.
PHOTOJOURNALISM - Each entry should be submitted as a tear sheet following PRINT guidelines above. This category will be judged for its photojournalistic quality, not for artistic merit.
BROADCAST (TV and Radio) – Each entry must be on separate VHS video cassette or CD for television and standard audio cassettes or CD for radio. Completed labels, including approximate running time, must be affixed both to the cassette and cassette box.
JUDGING Judging will be based on journalistic enterprise, value and pertinence to the reader, viewer or listener. In each category, judges may designate first-, second-, and third-place winners as well as honorable mentions. Categories without sufficient entries or without entries of sufficient quality will not have winners. From among first place winners from all categories, the judges will select a best-of-the-best Golden Wheel Award winner. Decisions of the judges are final. Judging for the 2008 International Wheel Awards is conducted by the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University under the leadership of Senior Associate Dean Richard Roth.
AWARD CATEGORIES
A) Best News Story or Subject-Related Series dealing with subjects, events or developments of importance to the automotive industry. B) Best Editorial or Column with judging on the basis of clarity of thought, sound reasoning and the power to influence public opinion. Include only one example with each entry. C) (Broadcast Only) Best News Program and Best Documentary. D) Best Product Review/Evaluation.
