Juan Carlos Gil and Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller Win 2008 Avis 'We Try Harder' Awards at ING Miami Marathon
MIAMI, Jan. 23, 2008 -- PR Racing and Avis Rent A Car System, LLC announced today that Juan Carlos Gil and Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller have won the 2008 Avis "We Try Harder" award in conjunction with the ING Miami Marathon. The award honors individuals who endeavor to overcome considerable obstacles through courage and extraordinary effort. A panel that included representatives from Avis and PR Racing selected the two winners. The awards will be handed out during an awards ceremony at CocoWalk on Sunday, January 27th.
Juan Carlos Gil, Miami, Fla.
Juan Carlos Gil, 25, was born in Medellin, Columbia with cerebral palsy and diagnosed with severe vision impairment. At the age of 12, he began to participate in semi-professional race venues and always finished first or second. At the age of 15, Juan Carlos participated in his first Junior National Wheelchair Championship. Juan Carlos has competed in the ING Miami Marathon twice and just competed in his first ING New York City Marathon this fall. Juan Carlos is a member of the Achilles Track Club, a national organization that helps runners with all forms of disabilities prepare to compete in running events, and is a recipient of the Achilles Endow a Chair program.
Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller, Milton, Fla.
Staff Sergeant Dustin Tuller graduated high school in 1994, and then was shipped off to basic training at Fort Benning. His first deployment was with the 10th Mountain Division for Operation Uphold Democracy in Haiti. In 2003, Tuller was activated with the Florida National Guard where he was deployed to Iraq. On December 23, 2003 while on a raid, Tuller received multiple gunshots to the legs and pelvis. SSG Tuller survived those injuries, but underwent amputation of both his legs. Over the last two years he has completed several marathons. He also plays tennis, basketball, and other activities. He supports many different causes and is a motivational speaker at schools. What carries him through and pushes him forward is the hope that others benefit from his positive attitude and the challenges that he has faced. Now retired at age 31, he resides back in his small hometown in Florida, raising his four children from age eight to four.
