Trains, Guns and Automobiles - A SPEED World Challenge Christmas

TOPEKA, Kan. (Dec. 21, 2007) - Santa may not be able to leave grip,
horsepower, race wins, or championships under the tree, but several SCCA
Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge drivers were able to recall Christmas
gifts that were just as good.

Not surprisingly, when World Challenge drivers are asked to recall the
best Christmas present they ever received, most picks involved wheels,
some of them plastic and some of them Toyos.

"I have to say the best Christmas gift was when I was two and a half and
my dad bought me a 50cc four-wheeler," Chip Herr said. "I literally rode
it every day until I got an 80cc when I was five."

Last year, Lawson Aschenbach got what several road racers likely had on
their wish list.

"Although it wasn't on Christmas Day (about a week before), learning
that I was going to be racing with Team Cadillac in 2007," Aschenbach
said.

If fate hadn't intervened, BimmerWorld team owner James Clay might have
been spending his weekends on train tracks instead of race tracks thanks
to his favorite gift.

"I'm not sure about the best, but the most memorable was probably a
model train set when I was a kid," Clay said. "I went downstairs late at
night to see if the presents had been delivered yet, and my parents were
putting it together. I was pretty into that for a while, but somehow I
got switched onto driving cars instead of trains when I got older."

The clear departure from the group is Woodhouse Performance team owner
Bob Woodhouse, who recalled the Christmas his wife gave him a paintball
gun.

"We previously had discussed the fact that we did not own a gun; no hand
gun, no rifle, shotgun, blowgun, or BB gun," Woodhouse said. "If I could
say I 'owned a gun' to my friends, perhaps I would be more manly. So
the paintball gun appeared under the tree as a good compromise; fun, not
too deadly, but an ominous threat to would be burglars. Why, just the
word of mouth, 'we have a gun,' would be a deterrent, like the lawn sign
that says 'this house protected by Yada Security Co.'"

After honing his skills on some lawn ornaments, the novelty wore off and
the paintball gun was put away. That is, until "the great wild turkey
infestation," the following summer. Upon taking cover from the crazed
flock in his garage, it occurred to Woodhouse what he had to do to
defend his homestead.

"Rushing out of the garage, now fully armed and expecting all of those
turkeys to vanish at the site of this destructive device made me yell,
'you guys get lost or you're gonna get it!' As if they understood every
word, three of the meanest birds headed right for me. Paint balls were
leaving a slime trail across a wing or two, but doing little to stop
their advance. I managed to pop one of those long necked menaces right
in the very goiter. That dropped him beak first to the driveway long
enough to catch his breath and me exclaim 'oh my God I think I killed
one!' He and the rest of the herd then made an exit about the speed of
your family cat after he polishes off a tin of Chicken of the Sea. But
hey, they never came back!

"There is a moral here," Woodhouse smiles. "Getting guns for Christmas
can keep the fowl play down at home."

And what about the Christmas list for 2008? While all drivers expressed
looking forward to spending the holidays with their friends and family,
both Herr and Aschenbach have been browsing the electronics isle. Herr's
been eyeing up an Ipod Touch and Aschenbach a Playstation 3.

Clay maintains a team owner mentality when composing his Christmas list.

"From Racing Santa, I am asking for axles that don't break!"

What more could Woodhouse want now that he can protect his family with
his trusty paintball gun?

"Turkey dinner would be fitting!"

Happy Holidays from the all SCCA Pro Racing staff and teams.
