Zipcar Rolls Out the 'Green Carpet' at Drive-In Event to Receive Car Donations for Local Charity
More than 20 Washingtonians have already donated their cars and become members of Zipcar for life
WASHINGTON, Nov. 29 -- Zipcar, the world's largest car sharing service, will host a Drive-In movie event today for 250 attendees, to encourage increased car-sharing in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. The event will be held at 7:00 p.m., at Landmark's E Street Cinema (555 11th Street, NW, Washington, DC)
Guests will enter on the green carpet, which will lead to a free screening of "Arctic Tale," a new wildlife adventure from National Geographic and Paramount Vantage. In conjunction with this event 21 area residents have already donated their vehicles to charity (resulting in 22 donations, as one donor gave two cars), becoming Zipcar members for life, and receiving $500 driving credit towards their Zipcar account. Proceeds from these donations will benefit Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), a non-profit that works to create a healthy, more livable region by promoting bicycling for fun, fitness, and affordable transportation. Donations will continue to be accepted until December 15, 2007, giving even more donors the chance to become Zipcar members for life and receive $100 driving credit.
"The sheer number of cars in a large metro area like Washington DC cause parking, traffic and congestion challenges," said Ellice Perez, Regional Vice- President for Zipcar. "This event is getting 21 cars off of the street and demonstrates that it is possible to truly live carefree and not deal with these daily hassles."
"I've realized more and more recently how unnecessary driving my own car is," said Beth Handy, Drive-In Event Donor. "Zipcar makes it so easy to give up my car and use mass transit, or their vehicles, instead. I am going to be saving money, as well as doing my part for the environment."
Attendees will enjoy a free screening of "Arctic Tale," an epic wildlife adventure from National Geographic and Paramount Vantage that explores the vast world of the great north. The movie tells the story of a walrus pup and a polar bear cub as they grow up. The Arctic, once an almost perpetual winter wonderland, seems to be melting beneath their feet. The movie will be released on DVD on December 4, 2007. Shannon Hebert, Vice President of Integrated Marketing for National Geographic Ventures will address the environmentally- minded audience, a perfect match for this movie
"We're thrilled to share 'Arctic Tale' with this new audience and lend support to Zipcar and WABA," said Hebert. "National Geographic is always looking for ways to tell the story of climate change -- from magazine articles and books to movies and television programs -- and we're delighted to have partners that will help deliver this critical message."
"WABA is very pleased to be a part of this event, and applauds the people that have decided to donate their cars," said Eric Gilliland, Executive Director of, WABA. "The residents of Washington DC are making a strong statement, and helping contribute to the overall health of the District."
