MINDY’S NASCAR MINUTE
Brownsburg, Ind. - (November 20, 2007) The Ringers’ teams in the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series and the Nextel Cup Series finished out their 2007 seasons
at the Homestead-Miami Speedway over the weekend during their respective
races.
On Friday night, what looked like was going to be two wins in a row and
three on the season for the Billy Ballew Motorsports No. 51 team, unfortunately
eluded driver Kyle Busch in the remaining laps of the Ford 200. Busch led on
three different occasions for a total of 69 laps, until the final restart
when his No. 51 Miccosukee Resort Chevrolet pushed up the track, allowing winner
Johnny Benson to complete the pass. Busch held on for second place.
Ballew also had his regular No. 15 Silverado fielded on Friday, with driver Andrew
Myers with backing from NEO Synthetic Oil. Myers completed the race in
34th.
Tim Sauter was the second Ringers’ backed team to come across the finish
line. Sauter piloted his No. 07 Lester Buildings/Green Light Racing entry home
to an 11th-place finish; while his race teammate Chris Jones in the No. 08
truck finished 31st. Brendan Gaughan took his No. 77 South Point Resort
Chevrolet to the garage in 19th at the end of the race. Gaughan barely missed
scoring a top-10 in points on the season. He finished only 45 points back from
David Starr in 11th place. Tim Sauter finished 16th in points on the season
and while Busch only had 11 starts on the season, he finished 26th in
points.
On Sunday in the Ford 400, Busch finished in second place, but it wasn’t the
younger Kyle Busch like on Friday night, instead his older brother, Kurt, in
his Penske Racing No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge. Busch took his No. 2 to the
front two different times to lead for a total of 17 laps in the season finale.
His second place finish also boosted him up three positions in the year-end
standings, giving him seventh place on the season and an introduction on stage
at the Nextel Cup Awards Ceremony in New York City next weekend.
His Penske Racing teammate Ryan Newman also led the field during Sunday’s
race. Newman piloted his No. 12 Alltel Dodge to the front three different
times for seven laps, before spinning alone and then fighting a loose race car
the rest of the race, resulting in an 18th-place finish. Thought Newman was
unable to make the top-12 in the Chase for the Nextel Cup championship, he did,
however, manage to finish in closest position you could get to the top-12,
that of 13th in the season-ending standings, 55 points over Greg Biffle.
Penske’s newest Cup driver Sam Hornish Jr., made his second start in his No.
06 Mobil 1 Dodge on Sunday. Unfortunately, Hornish brought out the sixth
caution of the race on lap 193 when he scraped the wall. He was able to
finish the race in 37th, but was 13 laps down.
All three NASCAR Series, Craftsman Truck, Nationwide (formerly Busch) and
Sprint (formerly Nextel) Cup Series will kick off their 2008 seasons at the
Daytona International Speedway in early February.
