Southern California Jiffy Lube Service Centers Partner with City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works to Expand Recycling Locations for Household Batteries

LOS ANGELES--More than 900,000 household batteries are improperly disposed of each year in Los Angeles, leaking chemicals that contaminate our air, water and even our food.1 To expand consumer access to approved recycling drop-off points, Los Angeles-area Jiffy Lube franchisees announced today a partnership with the City of Los Angeles Department of Public Works (DPW) to add collection containers at 28 stores.

We all need to do our part to help keep LA's air and water clean and safe. Recycling household batteries is an easy way to help clean up our environment and now Jiffy Lube is helping to make it easier to do that in the City of Los Angeles, said City Council President Eric Garcetti.

Each participating Jiffy Lube location will display a white container in which residents can place AA, AAA, C cells, D cells and button batteries (hearing aid and watch batteries). The batteries will be picked up by the DPW and recycled.

Jiffy Lube collects more used oil than any company in North America approximately 450 gallons every week at each of our stores in LA alone, so offering our customers the convenience of recycling their household batteries is our natural extension of our mission to be a good community partner, said Robert Curry, president of the Jiffy Lube Southern California Cooperative and owner of eight participating stores.

The program is expected to reach more than two million people through Jiffy Lube in-store communications alone. Additionally, the DPW will provide information through their monthly, mobile drop-off facilities.

Were excited that Jiffy Lube has opened its doors to the Citys recycling effort, becoming our first corporate partner to offer collection for household batteries, said Board of Public Works Commissioner Ernest Cárdenas. We want to continue to get the word out that batteries need to be taken to an approved drop-off facility. Tossing batteries in the trash is harmful to the environment, and its illegal.

The Department of Public Works Bureau of Sanitation currently operates six permanent drop-off facilities for household hazardous waste and used oil in the city of Los Angeles, said Enrique C. Zaldivar, interim director for the Bureau of Sanitation. Were always looking for partners to help us increase access to recycling points and its great that Jiffy Lube is giving us another 28 locations to which we can direct people to conveniently recycle their batteries and used motor oil.

Jiffy Lube hopes to expand the program next year throughout LA County. More information and a complete list of participating stores can be found at www.jiffylubela.com or by calling the DPW hotline at 1-800-98-TOXIC.
