BorgWarner Expects $1.95 Billion in New Business for 2008-2010; Turbochargers and Dual-Clutch Technology Lead Growth, Driven by Global Fuel Economy, Emissions and Performance Needs
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 5, 2007 -- BorgWarner Inc. today announced $1.95 billion of expected net new powertrain business for 2008 through 2010, a 15% increase over its previous three-year new business. Demand for the company's environmentally friendly technologies such as turbochargers and dual-clutch transmission technology continue to drive a growth rate for the company that exceeds that of the auto industry.
BorgWarner is a leading provider of highly engineered engine and drivetrain components and systems that address critical environmental needs around the globe such as fuel economy and air quality. The majority of the company's new business is outside of North America. About 80% of the programs are expected to be launched in Asia and Europe over the three-year period.
"As concerns about global climate change and rising fuel prices continue to escalate, BorgWarner is uniquely positioned among vehicle suppliers to deliver powertrain technologies in a broad range of products that address these needs," said Timothy M. Manganello, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "Over the next three years, we believe our fuel-efficient technology will clearly be a strong growth catalyst for new business as we continue to serve the needs of our expanding global customer base."
Of the total new business, 78% is anticipated from engine-related products such as turbochargers, ignition systems, emissions products, engine timing systems, variable cam timing modules and thermal systems. The other 22% is expected in drivetrain-related products including the company's fuel-efficient DualTronic(R) transmission technology.
"Our new business growth is a reflection of our globalization strategy," said Manganello. "We have outpaced the growth of the industry by developing and launching products with customers in those regions of the world that are growing the fastest. As growth in the auto industry continues to shift globally, we expect to be there to participate in that growth. Europe accounts for 50% of our expected new business. In Asia, as our expansion there continues, new business sales are expected to account for about 30% of the total by the end of the period. Korea and China represent the bulk of that new business. North America is approximately 20% of the anticipated new business over the three years and includes both transplants and domestic vehicle makers," he said.
The company expects noteworthy new business during the 2008 through 2010 period to include:
Engine Group -- Next generation passenger car turbochargers for a number of European OEMs -- Advanced turbochargers for light truck programs in North America and commercial vehicle programs in Europe and North America -- Emissions products for a variety of applications and for an expanding customer base worldwide -- Thermal systems for a variety of applications, including diesel pickups in North America, commercial trucks in Europe and light truck applications in China -- Chain-driven timing systems for North American, European and Asian OEMs -- Variable cam timing in North America -- Beru Instant Start Systems for various European OEMs Drivetrain Group -- DualTronic(R) transmission technology for European, North American and Asian programs that move the technology further across a broad range of applications -- Transmission shifting assemblies and controls for a variety of automatic transmissions -- All-wheel drive systems for programs in China, India and Korea
