MINDY’S MINUTE – CHARLOTTE RECAP
Brownsburg, Ind. - (October 18, 2007) It’s pretty much not a secret to
anyone, that I love the Charlotte area. So, after the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing
Series event at Virginia Motorsports Park last weekend, I trekked on down
Interstate 85 for the racing events at the beautiful Lowe’s Motor Speedway on my
weekend off for my annual trip.
Having grown up in dirt track racing and working at the former ASA Racing
Series, I met a lot of people whom I still keep in contact with that have
migrated to the Charlotte area to either work or race in NASCAR, in some way,
shape or form.
The racing action for the NASCAR festivities surrounding the races at Lowe’s
Motor Speedway kicked off on Wednesday at The Dirt Track at LMS with the
World of Outlaws Late Model Series. Ringers Gloves racer Shannon Babb took
home an $18,225 paycheck after starting in the eighth position for the 50-lap
feature.  Other Ringers notables in the field were: Darrell Lanigan, second;
Steve Francis, fourth; Rick Eckert, sixth; Chub Frank, seventh; Ryan Newman,
11th; Brian Shirley, 13th; Donnie Moran, 17th; Josh Richards, 20th. After the
Jani-King Showdown at the Dirt Track, the WoOLMS headed to Bulls Gap, Tenn.,
for the Tennessee Fall Brawl.
Ringers’ supporter Steve Francis picked up the win and head’s into the
Outlaws World Finals back at the Dirt Track at LMS as the point’s leader of the
famed late model series. Ringers’ notables finishing behind Francis included
Brian Shirley, sixth; Rick Eckert, ninth; Chub Frank, 11th; Donnie Moran,
12th; Josh Richards, 14th.
Racing activities at the big track kicked off on Thursday night with
Bojangles Pole Night and a Ringers’ team racer picking up the Budweiser Pole for the
Bank of America 500. Ryan Newman and his No. 12 Alltel Dodge clocked a lap
of 189.394 mph in 28.512 seconds. His Penske Racing teammate Kurt Busch put
his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge in the field in the eighth position. A win
eluded Newman with only three laps to go in the Bank of American 500 on Saturday
night, when he suffered a cut tire which spun him around and sent him into the
wall. Busch dropped a cylinder on lap 269, but was able to limp his Miller
Lite Dodge to the finish line in 26th, with Newman being relegated to a 28th
finish after his tire problem.
Before  their nights went sour, both drivers each led laps in the race;
Newman twice for 11 laps and Busch three times for a total of 13 laps.
The ARCA RE/MAX Series wrapped up its 2007 season at Toledo Speedway on
Sunday afternoon. Ringers’ supporters Ray Mooi and Justin Allgaier both
competed in the race. Mooi, hailing from New Lenox, Ill., piloted the No. 4 Dodge
Motorsports Dodge to a ninth-place finish, while Allgaier finished 26th.
Allgaier ran the entire ARCA season and finished fourth in the championship point
standings.
The NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series has one more weekend off before heading
to the final two races of the season in Las Vegas and Pomona (Calif.). The
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and the Nextel Cup Series head to Martinsville,
Va., this weekend for their respective races, while the Busch Series takes a
weekend off in preparation for the Sam’s Town 250 at Memphis Motorsports
Park next weekend.
