In-Vehicle Electronics Accelerate at the 2008 International CES
ARLINGTON, Va.--The 2008 International Consumer Electronics Show® (CES®), the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow, will showcase the latest in-vehicle technology, featuring the BMW Sauber F1 Team Pit Lane Park, a new destination by BMW and Intel, and a keynote by GM chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner. The International CES returns to Las Vegas, January 7-10.
CES will prominently feature the latest in-vehicle technologies including advancements in portable GPS, location based functionality, in-car video, wireless technology and integrated products for combining entertainment with navigation and security. Sales of in-vehicle technology are expected to top $10 billion in 2007 and total shipment revenues in the mobile video and navigation categories are forecasted to increase by 41 percent, reaching nearly $2.3 billion.
“CES is one of the largest car technology shows in the world, with more than 230 exhibitors covering at least 200,000 sq. feet of exhibit space dedicated to in-vehicle electronics,” said Karen Chupka, senior vice president of events and conferences at the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA®), the producer of the International CES. “This year’s show features the first automotive CES Keynote speaker in show history, and is filled with technology conference sessions, TechZones and partner programs.”
A key attraction is the BMW Sauber F1 Team Pit Lane Park, making their first U.S. appearance at CES. Attendees can watch live racing and stunt action along a 90 meter track from both the BMW Sauber F1 and Formula BMW race teams, plus experience race, game and technology zones. Formula One experts will also be on hand for questions.
Rick Wagoner, chairman and CEO of General Motors Corp., will deliver a keynote address at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 8.
Some of CES’ major in-vehicle electronics exhibitors include: Alpine Electronics, Clarion Corp. of America, Delphi, Eclipse, Directed Electronics Inc., JVC, Kenwood, Mitek Corp, Sirius Satellite Radio, THX, TomTom and XM Radio. As in the past, the entire North Hall of the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC) will be dedicated to in-vehicle electronics and house the majority of mobile exhibitors. CNET also will host an automotive stage in the North Hall.
The 2008 CES will feature more than 20 TechZones. Automotive retailers, installers and manufacturers will want to check out:
- Location Based Services (LBS) –This area features the latest technologies used to deliver highly personalized mobile services, based on location, allowing the mobile network operator to offer differentiation and increased profitability.
- IP Technology - Learn about the newest developments in voice-over-IP and integrated technologies from exhibitors like industry phone carriers, cable companies and Internet service providers at this TechZone.
- Vehicle Communication and Safety – This display features technology in active safety systems such as collision warnings, lane departure and curve over-speed, which offer advances in intelligent transportation safety.

- In-Vehicle Technology Knowledge Track– Includes sessions such as: Mobile on the Move: What's in Store for Car Electronics, Market Navigation for the Navigation Market, Progress of Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) Efforts, Business Models for Vehicle Infrastructure Integration, Aftermarket and OEM and Vehicle Communications.
- Connect2Car: The Automobile’s Convergence with Consumer Electronics SuperSession -- Co-organized by the Convergence Transportation Electronics Association (CTEA) and SAE International.
