ALMS (LAGUNA SECA) - VOICES OF MAZDA RACEWAY LAGUNA SECA: SASCHA MAASSEN
Penske Racing's Sascha Maassen will make his ninth American Le Mans Series start next weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is one of four venues that has been on the American Le Mans Series schedule since Day One. And Sascha Maassen is one of three drivers who has competed at each Series race on the famed California circuit. His record is quite impressive with three class wins and four pole positions. With Penske Racing looking for its third straight victory in Monterey, who better to offer his insights on the final race for the 2007 American Le Mans Series?
This track has it all: "It's my favorite track of the whole year. I love Laguna Seca; I love the area. I love the racetrack; It's going up and down, it has a lot of corners that go into each other. The Corkscrew is a combination of four or five turns. It's just amazing. I can only say to everybody who has a chance - go there a visit it and have a look at it. It's really great."
Goal No. 1: "We are competing against Acura, a very strong opponent. They have done a great job so our goal first is to stay ahead of them. It's difficult enough. And then sometimes in the race we see that opportunities arise to shine even brighter and then we take it of course. But this is not at the start of the race our strategy."
Where it started for Penske: "I remember at our first race we were very nervous, and now we are a little more settled. Our car has proven its reliability, and we want to win there of course. Last year we won the championship there, and this year I want to win at least the race there."
The final round of the 2007 American Le Mans Series is the Monterey Sports Car Championships at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The four-hour race is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. PT on Saturday, October 20. SPEED will air the race live from 5:30 to 10 p.m. ET. Live coverage from American Le Mans Radio and IMSA Live Timing and Scoring will be available at americanlemans.com.
