Modern Wiper Technology is Making it Safer to Drive in All Weather Conditions
BROADVIEW, Ill., Oct. 11, 2007 -- Modern windshield wiper technology is making it safer to drive in all types of weather - heavy snow, driving rain, blowing dust or even high winds. One of the most significant developments in wiper blade technology has been the introduction of 'bracketless' blades that keep the windshield clear and the view sharp far into the distance.
"Bracketless blades, such as the Bosch ICON, have completely done away with the conventional wiper blade's external steel or plastic brackets, multiple joints and pressure points," said Otto Stefaner, Senior Product Manager for Bosch, the world's largest supplier of automotive parts to vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket. Based on advanced technology originally introduced by Bosch in 1999 as the original equipment Aerotwin blade, the aftermarket Bosch ICON 'bracketless' blade is available for most new domestic and import vehicles.
According to Stefaner, these blades use internal dual precision-tensioned steel springs totally enclosed under an aerodynamic wind spoiler. Designed to distribute uniform pressure along the entire length of the blade, bracketless blades conform more precisely to the curvature of the windshield wiping more cleanly and quietly.
"This significantly improves driving visibility and safety in all types of weather, all year around," Stefaner said.
The ICON's integrated wind spoiler applies additional down force making the blade hug the windshield even at highway speeds. And the enclosed steel springs reduce the chance of snow and ice build-up, ensuring consistent performance in winter.
Another advantage is the dual rubber technology. The Bosch ICON uses harder rubber for the wiping edge that resists wear, and softer rubber flex for better flip over to remove the smallest droplets of moisture and ultimately provide 20 percent longer performance life.
Currently, Bosch is the largest supplier of bracketless blades worldwide with many car companies equipping their new models with these advanced technology wipers.
A pioneer in automotive technology development, Bosch has been a leader in windshield wiper systems for more than 75 years. Bosch introduced the first electric windshield wiper system in 1926, the first intermittent windshield wiper in 1971 and the two-component wiper blade element in 1994.
