Wittmer Paces Morning SPEED Touring Car Practice at Road
Atlanta
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wittmer Paces Morning SPEED Touring Car Practice at Road Atlanta
BRASELTON, Ga. (October 3, 2007) - Kuno Wittmer, of Montreal, Quebec,
needed only a lap at Road Atlanta to lay down the fastest practice time
of the morning. Seth Thomas, of Cumming, Ga., and Pierre Kleinubing, of
Coconut Creek, Fla., were second and third fastest, respectively, in the
first of two practice sessions for Round Nine of the SCCA Pro Racing
SPEED World Challenge Touring Car Championship, part of the 10th
Anniversary Petit Le Mans.
A light drizzle began to fall on the SCCA SPEED Touring Cars as they
made their way on course for the 20-minute morning practice session, but
that didn't stop Wittmer from turning a time of 1:32.890 (98.439 mph),
more than half a second faster than the current qualifying lap record of
1:33.523 (97.772 mph).
"The first ten minutes were fine. It was very dry," Wittmer said. "There
were a couple of sprinkles, but nothing that could wet the track
completely. I came in a couple times for changes and the car got a
little bit better. The last half of the season it was raining quite a
bit more and it wasn't really worth it. The track was still pretty dry,
but it was slick in places."
Wittmer's No. 44 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Acura RSX is the
same car Eric Curran used to win the pole last year at Road Atlanta and
Wittmer admits there weren't many changes that needed to be done from
last year's set-up.
"Eric Curran proved that the car could be pretty quick around here, so I
said, 'why don't we just start with what Eric did last year. Then we
changed a couple of things to suit my driving style. It's proven to be
really good again."
Georgia driver Thomas was second-fastest in the session, turning a
1:33.091 (98.226 mph) in his No. 38 Bimmerworld BMW 325i.
Wittmer's teammate and defending SCCA SPEED Touring Car Champion Pierre
Kleinubing ended the session in third, posting a 1:33.367 (97.936 mph)
in his No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned Acura TSX.
RealTime Racing team owner Peter Cunningham, of Grafton, Wis., was
fourth fastest. The No. 42 Acura Certified Pre-Owned Acura TSX driver
entered a time of 1:33.388 (97.914 mph). James Clay, of Blacksburg, Va.,
who was back in the car for the first time since Toronto, completed the
top five, turning a 1:33.466 (97.832 mph) in his No. 36 Bimmerworld BMW
325i.
Michael Galati was the fastest Mazda 6 in sixth, followed by the
quickest Audi A4 of Ian Baas and the Acura TSX of Brandon Davis., all of
whom entered times under the current qualifying record.
Charles Espenalaub (Mazda 6) and Chip Herr (Audi A4) completed the top
ten.
The second practice session for Round Nine of the SCCA SPEED Touring Car
Championship is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (EDT) today. Qualifying will
take place at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday. Live timing and lap notes are
