John Coughlin wins Top Dragster Shootout in Columbus COLUMBUS, Ohio (Sept 29) John Coughlin claimed the win in Saturday's JEGS Top Dragster Shootout, a specialty event held during qualifying for the third annual JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals at National Trail Raceway. Coughlin drove his Team JEGS dragster to a final round victory over Tom Elliott of Brooksville, Ohio in the final round. It was Coughlin's second win in as many weeks following his victory at the Division 1 Lucas Oil Series event at Atco Dragway. We've been on a roll lately and I just hope it doesn't stop any time soon, said Coughlin, the current points leader in Top Dragster and Super Stock. " Now we just need to keep the momentum going for tomorrow's race." Coughlin was joined in the winner's circle by Charlie Westcott Sr., who won the Mopar Hemi Challenge title. Westcott, of Parma, Mich., defeated Larry Woo of Birmingham, Mich., in the final round of the special event, which features head-to-head competition between 1968 Dodge Dart and Plymouth Barracuda factory race cars. Westcott posted an 8.68 elapsed time in the final after Wood red-lighted at the start. Specialty events were also held for competitors in Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street backed by Racers for Christ and the Drag Racing Association of Women. The wins went to Chris DePascale (Super Comp), Rick Bailey (Super Gas) and Matthew Viscone (Super Street). Newark, Ohio-based Pro Stock driver Larry Morgan, who is competing in Comp Eliminator this weekend, maintained his hold on the top spot with a run of 6.96-seconds in his Lucas Oil Dodge Stratus. Other top qualifiers are Anthony Bronge (Top Dragster), Greg Burba (Top Sportsman), Michael Volkman (Super Stock) and Rob Lloyd (Stock). Team JEGS driver Mike Coughlin is currently seeded seventh in the Top Sportsman field with a 6.89 run in his JEGS.com Chevy Cobalt. John Coughlin will begin Top Dragster eliminations from the No. 24 spot and he is qualified fifth in Super Stock. Final eliminations for all competitors at the JEGS NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals will begin Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
