The 15 honoree organizations were selected from 1,200 nominates to receive the national award by the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), an agency of the Department of Defense.
Accepting the award on Dollar Thrifty's behalf at a special awards dinner was President and CEO Gary Paxton. The celebration took place Sept. 12 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.
"In the military, the best leaders are those who always take care of their people -- and it is no different in the civilian workplace," said Thomas F. Hall, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. "Dollar Thrifty has shown that it too takes care of its people. Its employees who are also Reserve and Guard members know the company is helping take care of their family while they are away serving this country. We hope other companies will follow Dollar Thrifty's lead."
The award honors businesses in three categories: big business, small business and the public sector. Recipients were nominated by their employees who voluntarily serve in the National Guard and Reserve for exceptional support above the requirements of federal law.
Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc. received the award in the "Large Employer" category for its support of Guard and Reserve employees and their families during military service and their support for the ESGR mission. The company provides differential pay between military and base salary and also provides the option to continue health benefits for the employee and their families covered by some of the company's benefits plans for up to 355 days. The company also has been a financial supporter of the Blue Star Mothers and continually searches for ways to honor employees serving in the Guard and Reserve. For their outstanding support, the company was also awarded the 2006 ESGR Pro Patria Award.
"Dollar Thrifty is honored to receive this prestigious award on behalf of all its employees," said Gary L. Paxton, president and CEO of Dollar Thrifty. "For all they do for us, we want all our Guard and Reserve members to know we will steadfastly support them should they be called to duty."
