LUCAS VS TODD AGAIN IN FIRST ROUND AT MEMPHIS

MEMPHIS (Sept. 15) – The Lucas Oil Top Fuel drag racing team with Morgan Lucas aboard will assault the Memphis Motorsports Park for the 20th annual O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals on Sunday against friend and rival, J.R. Todd, in a rematch of last year’s first round. In the 2006 edition, Lucas defeated Todd in a tire-spinning race with the 23-year old driver overcoming treacherous track conditions of over 130 degrees.
In 2007, with the event being moved to a month later, has secured the perfect elements for racing and Lucas will be launching from the No. 7 position with his time on Saturday morning of 4.582 seconds, 320.28 mph.
“The car is doing fine,” said a happy Lucas. “We’re totally capable of winning the race tomorrow and it’s ours to lose at this point. Melanie (Troxel) and I are on the same side of the ladder and if we both get to the semis that will give us a change to have at least one of our team cars to go into the finals. That would kind of a big deal for us since we haven’t had any of our cars reach the finals in a while. I haven’t been to one all year, actually for the past two years. It would be a battery-recharging situation for us. We’ll see what happens; it’s going to be a long day tomorrow.”
With the turnabout of weather, MMP has offered the racers excellent surroundings with clear and dry conditions that decreased the adjusted altitude by 1,043 feet difference from the hot and humid conditions on Friday.
“The track is good for Memphis,” said Lucas. “The track is designed to be decent in the heat, but when it gets cold, it gets better. The problem is the sun did beat down on it today and the air is better than the track. Any racetrack in this scenario would be questionable.”
In overall match ups, Morgan leads Todd 2-0, with the last pairing being at the Summitracing.com Nationals in Las Vegas in the quarterfinals back in April.
“Every time we race, I’ve had the upper hand,” he said. “It’s fun racing against J.R. because he’s such a good sport about everything. We have this competitive drive against each other to see who can be the best on the startling line.
“Who knows, the guy might be a teammate of ours next year. I don’t know right now, but I sure don’t want to make him mad either way.”
ESPN2-HD will air the final competition rounds of the O’Reilly Mid-South Nationals beginning at 7 p.m. EDT on Sunday, September 15.
