BLOOMINGTON, IN (September 15, 2007) - Last night was the first night all season that you needed a jacket before the night was over. Most real race fans have carried jackets around in the car all summer. We've all gone to a racetrack where the weatherman has predicted a minimum overnight of 75; and our teeth are chattering before the sun goes down. It doesn't happen very often; but it's a miserable night when it does. That's why most of us carry a jacket in our cars all season. It's a lot better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

After two weeks off, our competitors were all ready to race. And, they showed up in force. It had actually been nearly a month since most of the sprint cars had tested the red clay; because most of them chose to pass on the winged show. But they were back last night; and they were all doing everything possible to improve their position in their points race.

SAFETY - KLEEN SPRINT CARS -

Daryl Tate unloaded Jeff Bland, Jr.'s sprinter with a 41 point lead over Danny Holtsclaw in the Safety - Kleen sprint car points race. Both Jeff and Danny are seeking their first Bloomington Speedway championship and probably their first championship anywhere. From a championship standpoint they had much different agendas. If Bland finished close to Holtsclaw, he would unload next week with a pretty comfortable lead. However, if he were to miss the feature and if Holtsclaw were to win it, it would probably be anybody's championship next Friday night. However, neither Tate nor Bland really wanted to risk that. Consequently they entered Danny Roberts' 21x car with Kenny Carmichael as the driver. Should some misfortune befall the 21s, Carmichael would turn the 21x over to Bland. And, Carmichael could be expected to put the Tate wrenched sprinter safely in the show.

In the first sprint car heat, Devin Priddy and Cole Whitt started side by side on the front row. Whitt charged into the lead and held it. Dickie Gaines had started on the outside of the second row; and he drove to a strong second place finish. Brady Short, Bobby Stines, and Lance Grimes picked up the rest of the tickets to the feature.

Danny Holtsclaw caught a good draw and started on the pole. He then went on to win his heat followed by Jeff Bland, Jr., Jon Sciscoe, Kenny Niflis, and Kenny Carmichael. Holtsclaw picked up a point or two with his heat race finish; but he was going to have to do better than that in the feature if he was going to improve his position in points race.

Robert Ballou started sixth in the final heat race; and drove to an impressive win followed by Kenny Carmichael, Jr., Derek Franks, A.J. Martin, and Dave Scott.

When the green flag dropped to start the "B" Feature, 13 year old Dylan Burge tangled with Chris Babcock and John Dick. All of them were able to restart; but Burge spun again and fell victim to the two spin rule and a rookie chief mechanic, his stepfather, Brian Climer. Dylan also spun at the start of his heat race; however, on restarting, he drove a pretty smooth race. This was there first visit to Bloomington Speedway; and they will certainly do better the next time.

Bub Cummings started 5th in the "B" feature; and, by the time that the first lap went into the books, Bub was in the lead. However, Kent Christian who had started 7th was running second. But, on the second lap, young Arin McIntosh had taken over second place and Christian fell back to third. On the 8th circuit Christian took second back; and the next lap he took the lead. On the white flag lap McIntosh moved back into second followed by Cummins, Eric Smith, and Chris Babcock.

When the feature got underway Ballou and Holtsclaw started side by side on first row; but, before the first lap was in the books, the race had already become a duel between Ballou and Kenny Carmichael, Jr. Ballou almost certainly had the better car. However, while he was rim-riding and thrilling the assembled fans, Carmichael was down on the "huggy pole" taking the short way around. He got past Ballou on lap five and led until lap 13 when Ballou edged ahead. The duel continued; and either of them could have won until the final laps when Ballou finally put a little distance between his mount and Carmichael's. Jon Sciscoe came home third with Brady Short and Kenny Niflis rounding out the top five. Many of the fans raved about Carmichael's splendid performance. And, Carmichael deserved every word.

O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds in the Topless Modified Nationals --

Last night marked the first time that the O'Neal Wood Products modifieds raced topless on the red clay. And, it was great to see the drivers at work in their cockpits. Although most of us didn't think it would, the missing top actually seemed to change the way the car handled. And some of the drivers had a little more difficulty acclimating to it than others did.

The $1500 winners purse pulled in a good field of cars; and the guys raced hard for the prize money that was up for grabs. Adam Sasser started on the pole and took the lead at the drop of the green flag. Just about all of the top modified drivers challenged him during the course of the race. Matt Boknecht was the first driver to mount a challenge; but, on the eighth lap, Shelby Miles passed Boknecht to take second place. Ray Humphrey also moved up to get himself involved in the battle for the win. Boknecht moved back into second place on lap 17; and the race became pretty much a duel between Sasser and Boknecht; Of course, a win by either of them wouldn't have been a surprise to anyone. However, anyone who had selected either of them to visit victory lane was in for a surprise. John DeMoss had started sixth and had run the entire race among the leaders. He had moved into third place on lap 22; and he passed Boknecht to take second on lap 28. However, Boknecht returned the favor on lap 29. When the white flag wave John DeMoss made his final charge for the checkered flag. As they crossed the finish line, DeMoss led by maybe six inches. It had been a great race; and it ran flag to flag under the green. Although he didn't collect much of the lap prize money, John was almost certainly happy with the $1500 first place money. Boknecht finished third with Jesse Cramer and Ray Humphrey rounding out the top five. These great competitors had done all of this while running the distance without a single caution flag.

In preliminary action Humphrey, Sasser, Chad Combs, and Cramer won the heat races; while John Davis won the "B" feature.

Tire & Wheel Center Super Bombers -

The final race of the night featured our Tire and Wheel Center Super Stocks. In preliminary action Winston Howe won the first heat race from his outside first row starting position followed by Clayton Perry, Kevin Arthur, Travis Howe, and Ben DuBois.

Joe Lucas won the second heat from the pole position while Troy Clark came from sixth place to finish second. Brad Cummings, Mike Jones, and Josh Burton collected the final three tickets to the feature.

Jeremy Hines started on the pole and drove to another convincing win in the final heat race while Jack Frye raced from the tail to a second place finish followed by Tom Ault, Steve Hollars, and Tami Lawson.

Travis Todd led the super stock "B" feature flag to flag ahead of Chris Hillman, Michael Purtlebaugh, Mike Vest, and Steve Peeden.

When the green flag waved to start the feature, Seymour's Jeremy Hines charged into the lead; and he held it for the first couple of laps; before Winston Howe worked his way past him to take the point. However, anyone who might suspect that Hines would let it go at that and settle for second hasn't spent much time watching Hines at work on the red clay. Besides, when you're having the kind of season that Jeremy's having., you sometimes get a little luck to go along with it. On the seventh lap, Howe pulled into the infield and rolled to a stop. His win would have to wait for another night.

Brad Cumming started eighth and moved around Jack Frye to take second on the ninth circuit. He kept Hines within reach for the rest of the distance; but he wasn't going to pass Jeremy. Last night win was the eighth win of the season for Jeremy. That means that his worst record for the season would be winning half of his features on the red clay. That is a record that Jeremy can take pride in for the rest of his career.
