Freescale 8-bit, 8-pin Device for Entry-Level Automotive Applications Delivers Small Footprint, High Integration
AUSTIN, Texas--Freescale Semiconductor is providing embedded developers with a cost-effective 8-bit microcontroller (MCU) to help expand their automotive design possibilities. As automotive applications continue to become smaller, more sophisticated and more cost-sensitive, designers require a broader range of affordable, feature-rich MCU options. To address this need, Freescale has introduced the S08QD MCU family – the company’s first 8-bit small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) devices designed to reduce board space, system cost and power consumption for entry-level automotive applications.
The S08QD family provides exceptional flexibility and functionality to help developers design a wider array of automotive applications. The S08QD’s high level of integration and 5V support within a compact, 8-pin package make it ideal for cost-sensitive applications that require higher voltages. In-vehicle applications include HVAC dampeners, mirror dimming, actuators, sensors/meters, watchdogs, push button control and other entry-level, general-purpose automotive applications.
The S08QD MCU family integrates a four-channel, 10-bit analog-to-digital controller (ADC) designed for higher resolution, faster conversion and an automatic compare function. The ADC enables the MCU to easily interface with analog inputs from devices such as sensors by converting the analog signal to a digital value. The automatic-compare functionality allows the MCU to compute values and perform comparisons to a preset threshold.
The S08QD also includes an internal clock source (ICS) module containing a frequency-locked loop (FLL) controlled by an internal or external reference. The internal reference clock can eliminate the cost of all external clock components, which helps reduce board space and enhances system reliability.

The S08QD family offers a robust support environment and pin-compatible migration path within Freescale’s 8-bit automotive MCU portfolio. The S08QD is pin-compatible with the SG and EL MCU families. Shared peripherals and a common set of development tools help make it quick and easy for engineers to leverage their design investments.

CodeWarrior Development Studio is included with the DEMO9S08QD4 demo board and also is available for download online at no charge. Going well beyond basic code generation and debugging, the software can help designers help streamline application design from the moment they open the box. It features an intuitive, state-of-the-art project manager and build system; a highly optimized compiler; a graphical, source-level debugger; integrated profiling capabilities; a full chip simulator, and more.

S08QD family devices are available now in production quantities, and the suggested resale pricing begins at 74 cents in 10,000-unit quantities
Development kits for the S08QD family include the DEMO9S08QD4 demonstration board, available now for the suggested resale price of $59. The kits also include a complimentary Special Edition version of CodeWarrior Development Studio for Microcontrollers v6.0, which supports both the QD4 and QD2 families with comprehensive development capabilities.
