Don Miller Captures First Win of ’07 on Opening Night of Kings Weekend
Friday September 7, 2007
By: Rodney Rescott

West Lebanon, NY- There was plenty of heat to go around Friday night for the opening night of the Coors National Race of Kings Weekend and the Valley of Speed. The two day spectacular got off to a grand start with plenty of action on the High Banks.

The special 30 lap feature for the headliner Sportsman division took to the speedway first. And right from the start, Don Miller’s #11 took to the top spot from Kevin Petrucci who started on the pole. By turn two, Miller check out on the field, trying to put as much space between him and the field as possible.

Deep in the field, defending champ Jeff Watson’s #22 was marred in heavy traffic that included the #68 of Art Collins, the #16 of Kyle Hoffman, and the #00 of Chris Kokosa. But back at the front, the 2nd generation driver Neil Stratton powered his #87 into the runner-up spot trying to make a run on Miller.

By lap 15, Stratton was following in Miller’s tracks. But coming on late in the race was the #9H of Ed Harkins. Harkins got to Stratton, but didn’t have enough to mount a serious challenge. But the #87 was concentrating solely on the rear deck of Miller.

The only caution flew on lap 25 for the #2B of Josh Gaylord, as he made heavy contact with the turn 3 boiler-plate, causing the field to bunch up for a 5 lap shoot out.

On the restart, Miller powered away, but the #87 didn’t let him get too far, and made several attempted on Miller. But it just wasn’t gonna be enough as the Ace Carting Corp #11 of Don Miller held on for his first victory of 2007.

At the line, Neil Stratton crossed in 2nd, followed by a charging Ed Harkin. Kory Sandstedt crossed the line 4th, with Frank Harper finishing 5th.

Next on the schedule of events was the 20 lap Pro Stock race. This race had more on it than just the win. The points season coming to nearly a close, with just one week remaining, the field was going after every point they could muster.

But at the front of the field it was Justin Herron and Ed Bachand bringing the field to the green. But it didn’t take long for the big guns to show their stuff. Robbie Speed, Mike Middleton, Kevin Arnold, and Jay Corbin began to weed their way through the field trying to get to the front. Middleton and Speed tried the more aggressive approach, as current point leader Arnold and Corbin eased their way through each position.

But by the time the lap counter click off lap 5, the #35 of Rick Dempsey had taken over the top spot, and he didn’t want to give it up. And with the field only slowing for 3 cautions for minor incidences, Dempsey just had to hope he had enough to hold back the likes of Middleton and Arnold.

But at the checkers, Dempsey proved he had enough, even with Middleton trying desperately to get by late in the race. The #35 of Rick Dempsey captured his second win of 2007, followed by the #38M of Middleton. 3rd acrossed the stripe was Jay Casey, followed by Jay Corbin and Chris Crews to round out the top 5.

Kevin Arnold now holds just a 28 point advantage over Jay Corbin, with Mike Middleton sitting 51 markers out of the top spot.

In the Limited Pro Stocks, Dave Colwell held off a late race charge by Rob Maxon to take his second win of 2007. Maxon crossed the line second, followed by George Miles Jr., Jay Kretuziger Jr., and Chip Martin for your top 5.

The Pure Stocks were once again in full force. The winners were: PS#1 Chris Murphy, PS#2 Captain Kirk Stanaway, and PS#3 went to Mike Eichstedt.

In the 4 Cylinder finale, Todd Goldstein took the checker s in the Double Cam class, followed by Chris White winning the Single Cam class.

Next on the schedule is the annual Coors National 200 and Race of Kings. Saturday’s start is scheduled for 3pm with time trials, for both the Big Blocks and 358’s to begin by 4pm. The Coors National 200 is a Super DirtCarŽ Series race that also gives away a guaranteed starting spot for both the Rite Aid 200 at the Syracuse Mile, and the Eastern States 200 at Orange County.

The Coors National 200 is the first leg of the 200 lap Triple Crown. The Lebanon Valley 2007 Modified Champ J.R. Heffner is the defending Champion of this event. The 50 Lap Race of Kings 358 Modified Tour Series event will also same the headline on the schedule.
