News From USW: USW Activist to Testify at U.S.-China Commission Hearing

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.--News From USW: Members of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission will hear testimony in Raleigh on Thursday from a United Steelworkers local union leader, representing workers here who produce 50,000 tires a day.

During a commission hearing at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Darryl Jackson, president of USW Local 959, representing 1,800 members employed at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. in Fayetteville, will tell the panel of the mounting threat that his members face from tires imported from China.

The commission will hear testimony from government officials, state researchers and business leaders.

In addition to Jackson, others who have been invited to testify include: Patrick J. Conway, a UNC economist; Rick L. Weddle, president and CEO of the Research Triangle Park Foundation; Dr. Gary Gereffi, a Duke University professor and director of its Center on Globalization, Governance and Competitiveness; Wyatt Bassett, president of Vaughan-Bassett Furniture in Elkin and Michael Chen, vice president of corporate marketing at Red Hat.

The hearing will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. and is open to the public.
