It’s the show of shows for Funny Car driver Densham

INDIANAPOLIS (August 30) - The Mac Tools U. S. Nationals is the NHRA’s most prestigious race. Just ask Torco Racing Fuels/ Racebricks Collectibles Funny Car driver, Gary Densham. No one knows better than the former high school shop teacher from California, winner of the 50th annual event and former winner of the Skoal Showdown, which also takes place during the annual Labor Day weekend extravaganza.

“Indy is as much of an endurance run as it is a race,�?? Densham said. “You pull in here on Monday and work your tail off for eight straight days and hope you leave with a Wally and a few dollars in your hand, not to mention bragging rights for the rest of your life.

“Of course for us Funny Car folks, Indy has always been a race within a race because of the Skoal Showdown but now with the NHRA’s Countdown to the Championship, it’s a triple whammy; the race itself, the Showdown and the Countdown�??

Densham’s season hasn’t quite gone the way he wanted it to, but with over three-decades of experience, he knows it takes perseverance to overcome the obstacles that a 23-race season can present.

“Coming into the homestretch of the season we felt there were some things we could do to get us a few round wins,�?? Densham said. “We had successes in some areas of the car in the first part of the season that we changed because we thought we could make them better. It didn’t turn out the way we were hoping so we’re going back to the old set-up this weekend. Sometimes the old way is still the best, but you can’t fault us for trying to improve.�??

Unlike other races on the 23-event NHRA POWERade Drag Racing tour, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park takes place over four days instead of the usual three for the professional classes. Final Eliminations will be held on Labor Day, Monday, September third.

“If the weather cooperates, it doesn’t rain and its not too hot, we should have a little something up our sleeve for the rest of the field,�?? Densham said. “Everybody and their mother will have cars here which will make it a great event for the fans. We’ll be doing our part to make it the best race of the year.�??
