Shawn Cowie of Mission, B.C., made his way to the winner's circle in Top Alcohol Dragster for the second time this season at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Heartland Championships presented by KanEquip and Aeromotive at Heartland Park Topeka. And reigning division Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Cy Chesterman, Sioux City, Iowa, scored his first win of the year.

In the final, Cowie, who had run consistently all day, ran 5.436 seconds at 263.46 mph to beat out No. 1 qualifier Jeff Hamelink of Savage, Minn. In just his second outing this season, Hamelink qualified in the top spot and made it to the final where he made a 5.498-second, 253.04 mph run.

Chesterman, who started the year with a runner-up finish in Great Bend, Kan., has struggled at his last three races. But today, his 5.838-second, 251.86 mph effort was more than enough to earn him the win over Paul Anderson, Erie, Colo., who ran 6.971 seconds at 180.94 mph in the final. Anderson, who came into the race tied for first in the division points standings with Roger Bateman of Calgary, Alb., scored a win a week ago at an out-of-division race in Acton, Mont. Chesterman took out Bateman in the first round of eliminations today, giving Anderson the points lead.

Thomas Schmidt, who was the runner-up at the division's last event, scored the win in Comp Eliminator over David Beckley. Justin Jenkins and Bub Miller squared off in the Super Stock final with the win going to Jenkins. Gary Stinnett earned the win in Stock Eliminator over Luke Siebert, Bob Fuller beat David Harrington in the Super Comp final and Sheldon Gecker outpaced Mike Ferderer in the final round of Super Gas. Super Street racer Brandon Kanan wheeled his car to the winner's circle, beating out Randy Davin. The Top Dragster winner was Matt Driskell, who beat Rick Beemer in the final and in Sportsman Motorcycle, Craig Vogt got the win, besting Benjamin Gibson.

West Central division racers head to Earlville, Iowa, for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Tri-State Raceway will host the final race on the division's calendar, September 7-9
