Pecorari Leads STaSIS Audi One-Two-Three at Mosport for Maiden SPEED TC Pole

CANADA (Aug. 25, 2007) – Adam Pecorari, of Aston, Pa., claimed his first SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car pole today, leading a STaSIS Audi one-two-three in damp conditions at Mosport International Raceway, part of the Mobil 1 Presents the Grand Prix of Mosport. Defending race winner Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., will start second.

Driving the No. 19 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Pfaff Audi A4, Pecorari changed from wet to dry tires after a red flag stopped the session early to remove a car from the turn five gravel. After the session resumed, he clicked off a number of fast laps, finally taking the pole with a time of 1:37.769 (90.544 mph) around the 2.459-mile (3.957-km), 10-turn circuit.

“We had a very good car on Thursday and Friday in the dry, so I knew wet or dry we’d be fairly quick,” the 21-year old polesitter said. “Obviously with the all-wheel drive we have an advantage in the wet. I wasn’t at the Grand Prix of Toronto, so this is my first time qualifying in the wet. Luckily, Thursday morning the track was very similar to this and we went out on slicks, so I kind of knew how the car would handle. 

“We were quickest on that one lap before the red flag came out. We came in and I said ‘put the dry tires on, hook the [sway] bar back up and we’ll go back out.’ So I went back out on the dry tires and it took me a little time, but then I went four or five seconds faster. The car is great and the team’s been working really hard.

“I’ve got to thank Pfaff, Paul Lambert and Todd Cope at STaSIS Engineering for sure. My mechanic and crew are doing an amazing job. I’ve never missed a session or a lap, because these guys are working so hard. They’re the first ones to get here and the last ones to leave. I give them all the credit in the world.”

Not surprisingly, Pecorari’s teammates utilized the all-wheel-drive in their identical Audis to take the next two spots on the grid. Herr, who won in the rain at Mosport in 2006, will start second after turning a lap of 1:38.605 (89.776 mph) in his No. 17 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Pfaff entry. Ian Baas, of Noblesville, Ind., will start third in the No. 18 STaSIS/Clear Capital/Pfaff Audi with a time of 1:39.615 (88.866 mph).

 “In the rain, if it’s not Audi one, two, three, we didn’t do our jobs,” Pecorari added.

Michael Galati, of Olmsted, Ohio, was is the first front-wheel drive car on the grid, qualifying fourth with a time of 1:39.732 (88.761 mph) in his No. 95 Mazda North America/Tindol Mazda 6. Four-time Mosport winner Pierre Kleinubing will start fifth in his No. 1 Acura Certified Pre-Owned/RealTime Racing Acura TSX after turning a quick time of 1:40.089 (88.445 mph).

Randy Pobst (Mazda 6), Kuno Wittmer (Acura RSX), Peter Cunningham (Acura TSX), point leader Jeff Altenburg (Mazda 6) and Roberto Santos (Mazda 6) completed the top 10.

Sunday’s race will make its standing start at 11:15 a.m. (EDT). Live timing and scoring as well as lap notes for the race can be seen at the SCCA Pit Board at www.world-challenge.com. The race will be broadcast on SPEED Saturday, Sept. 1 at 1 p.m. (EDT).
