MINDY’S MINUTE: DELAYED RACES IN CUP, NHRA DUE TO SOGGY SUNDAYS
Brownsburg, Ind. - (August 23, 2007) What is one of the most dreaded things
that can happen on race day to a racer? Rain. Not only did it dampen and
extend the weekend until Wednesday for the NHRA hot rodders in Reading, Pa.,
but also prolonged the weekend for the NASCAR Nextel Cup driver at Michigan
International Speedway until Tuesday.
Persistent showers hung over the Brooklyn, Mich., area Sunday and Monday,
finally letting up on Tuesday long enough to complete the 3M Performance 400.
When the checkered finally flew Tuesday afternoon, a Ringers supporting team
driver was in Victory Lane.
Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch and his No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge led on four
different occasions for a total of 92 laps to capture his second win in the past
three races. With this win, it helps solidify his 12th in the Chase for the
Nextel Cup, but doesn’t guarantee it. After a 34th place qualifying effort,
his teammate Ryan Newman led his No. 12 Alltel Dodge through the field to a
16th place finish.
On Saturday, Penske Racing’s Sam Hornish Jr., piloted the No. 12 Mobil 1
Dodge to gain the ever important seat time in a stock car, before he makes a
switch to the NASCAR series on a permanent basis. Despite fighting an
ill-handling race car throughout most of the race, he was able to bring the No. 12
home in one piece in 25th place. His next appearance in a NASCAR series will
not be until he concludes his IndyCar Series season later this year.
All three NASCAR series head to Bristol, Tenn., this weekend for their
respective races. The Craftsman Truck Series actually ran on Wednesday, with
Ringers racer Brendan Gaughan almost picking up his first win of the season, but
he had to settle being a bridesmaid in the O’Reilly 200, finishing second.
However on his weekend off the previous week, Brendan was not a bridesmaid…
but the groom. Gaughan married his fiancée, Tatum, in a ceremony in Vail,
Colo., on August 18.
Everyone at Ringers Gloves sends congratulations and best wishes to Brendan
and his new bride, Tatum!
When NHRA racing finally got completed on Wednesday, three Ringers
supporting racers ended up with Wally’s in their possession; Tony Pedregon in Funny
Car, Dave Connolly in Pro Stock and Matt Guidera collecting his first win in
Pro Stock Motorcycle.
Three Ringers supporting teams were also runner-ups in Reading; Hot Rod
Fuller in Top Fuel, Kurt Johnson in Pro Stock and Angelle Sampey in Pro Stock
Motorcycle.
All the NHRA straight liners have this weekend off in preparation for the
biggest drag race of the year, the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway
Park at Indianapolis next weekend. Another race held within the U.S.
Nationals is that of the Ringers Gloves Pro Bike Battle. Ceremonies for the
specialty motorcycle shootout commence at 1:45 p.m. with the first round
following shortly thereafter.
