Current points leader Dario Franchiiti earned the pole position with a fast lap of 218.308 mph (32.9810 seconds).

QUEST FOR FOUR: The Target team is hoping to keep up the momentum created by three consecutive winning weekends by Scott Dixon on the road Course at Watkins Glen, Nashville Superspeedway, and the road course at Mid-Ohio.

Dixon will attempt to become the first IndyCar Series driver to win four races straight this weekend at Michigan. Dixon tied the series record for consecutive wins (3) with a victory at Mi-Ohio on July 22. The team has never done it in the IndyCar series but has won four straight with driver Alex Zanardi in 1998 (CART) with wins at Detroit, Portland, Cleveland and Toronto.

AND THE LEADER IS… Dan Wheldon still has the most laps led this season with 578, while Scott Dixon has led laps in 9 races this season, the most of any driver this year to date.

A LOOK at MICHIGAN IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR: Last year at MIS following a rain delay, Dan Wheldon finished third from a ninth place starting spot, while teammate Scott Dixon started in fifth place and was running second to his teammate, but finished 16th after falling two laps down early in the race after running out of fuel when the track went yellow and pit were closed.

Dixon has qualified in the top five in each of the past four seasons at Michigan. (2nd in 2003, 3rd in 2004, 4th in 2005, 5th in 2006) His best finish was 5th in 2003

Wheldon ‘s best qualifying position was 8th (2004) but has finished in the top three in his last three races at Michigan (3rd in 2004, 2nd in 2005, 3rd in 2006.)

The Target team has won three times at Michigan in 1996-97 and 2000 with drivers Jimmy Vasser, Alex Zanardi and Juan Montoya. It has also won the pole three times in 1996 and 1999 with Vasser, and in 2003 with Thomas Scheckter.

THE (Championship) RACE IS ON! By virtue of three consecutive victories, Scott Dixon (450 points) cut Franchtti’s (474 points) lead in the championship to 24 points from 65 just 3 weeks ago. Target teammate Dan Wheldon (357 points) is fourth in the Championship, six points behind Tony Kanaan (363). Sam Hornish Jr. rounds out the top five with 345 points.

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS: Highlights this season include three pole positions and five race wins. The Target team has lead 763 laps of a possible 2079, and Dan Wheldon still leads the charge with 578 laps led. Wheldon also has a pole position and a pair of victories while Dixon has been on a tear lately with two poles, three consecutive wins and has kept his record streak of running at the finish alive at 28 consecutive races, an IndyCar Series record.

NEXT RACE: Kentucky Speedway, Meijer Indy 300, Saturday, Aug 11 at 6:30 pm

TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING QUOTEBOARD:

SCOTT DIXON: “It wasn’t too bad a qualifying run. Pretty much what we expected really. I’m not sure how much your starting position matters here as long as you are in the top ten really. People have come from even further back to win this race. You can definitely pass if you have a good car. (Going for four consecutive wins) This is probably the most difficult track to try to do that at and I have not had the best of luck here to be honest. I finished 5th here in 2003 and the rest of my races have been rather forgettable. Butit certainly would be nice to continue the streak but what is most important would be to finish ahead of Dario Franchitti for the points race.”

DAN WHELDON: “This track has been very good for me and I’ve had some really good finishes here the past few years and it certainly would be nice to finally win it. It’s a shame to be losing this race. It’s always been great racing here and it’s always been a great show for the fans. My best memory I have of Michigan was not from racing but from watching the Michael Andretti Juan Montoya battle here many years ago. That was really cool.”
