GM's June market share slumped to 22.1 percent, dipping below the previous monthly low of 22.3 percent in October 2005, according to Edmunds' AutoObserver.com.
"The October 2005 low-water mark came the month after GM instituted its employee pricing promotion, which was successful in terms of increasing sales volume, but it wiped out inventory for October sale," reported Edmunds' AutoObserver.com Senior Editor Michelle Krebs.
"GM may have miscalculated the need for incentives in June, particularly as Toyota and Honda boosted incentive spending to their record levels," said Alex Rosten, analyst for Edmunds' AutoObserver.com.
