Ely, Mayberry and Baker Take Trips to Victory Lane at SSP on Thursday Night; Father's Day Event to be Held on Saturday Night
Newberrytown, PA (June 14, 2007) - Thursday night at the Susquehanna Speedway Park found Dave Ely edging out Tracy Readinger by inches on the last lap in the 20-lap ARDC Midget feature. Tom Mayberry won the 20-lap Central PA Legends Cars feature event. Van Baker won the 10-lap Great American School Bus Race.
The 20-lap ARDC feature started off slow with a one car flip in turn three and four for Eric Heydenrich. After that, the action was hot and heavy. Many multi-car battles could be found all over the track. Scott Zipp jumped out to the early lead.
At the midway point of the race, it was a five car battle for the lead. A blanket could be thrown over the cars of Scott Zipp, Nick Wean, Dave Ely, Brett Arndt and Tracy Readinger. Drivers exchanged positions such as from fourth to the lead and visa versa lap after lap swapping positions.
On lap 14, Carey Becker spun in turns 1 & 2 to close up the field. Readinger brought the field to the green with heavy pressure from Ely and Arndt. On the next lap Ely finally got by Arndt and set his sights on the leader. On the final lap Ely tried Readinger high in turn 1 & 2 and was unable to make the pass. Going into turn 3 & 4, Ely went low under Readinger and at the line, Ely was declared the winner by less than three inches over Readinger. Arndt finished third, followed by Nick Wean and Frank Polimeda.
In the 20-lap Central PA Legends Cars feature event, Tyler Bear jumped out to the early lead when a caution came out after the first lap. On the restart, Bear continued to lead over Tom Mayberry and Randy Kissinger. At the midway point restart, Bear continued to hold off the challenges from Mayberry. Every lap, Bear made the high side work as Mayberry went low. Mayberry finally made the winning pass with two laps to go and picked up the win.
Two open wheel veterans, Smokey Snelbaker and Brian Earnst failed to qualify in their first night out in the Legends Cars. Snelbaker had a qualifying spot in the consolation with two laps to go but was involved in a two car spin. He made his way back to seventh, one spot out of qualifying in the last two laps.
