RACING UNDERWAY AT ROUTE 66 RACEWAY

 

            JOLIOT, Ill. - Racing got underway today at the Indicom
Electric NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Route 66 Raceway.
Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Bill Reichert and Top Alcohol Dragster Funny
Car racer Jay Payne finished the day strong qualifying on top. 

            Reichert of Owosso, Mich., and defending Lucas Oil National
Champion took the top spot with a pass of 5.354 seconds at 272.61 mph.
Reichert finished ahead of No. 2 qualifier Kate Harker of Gainesville,
Ga., who ran a time of 5.417 seconds at 261.07 mph.

Payne of Claremont, Calif., got off to a fast start finishing ahead of
the pack with a pass of 5.754 seconds at 239.48 mph.  Payne outran Scott
McVey of Winnipeg, M.B., who qualified with a time of 5.783 seconds at
250.60 mph.

In Comp Eliminator, Royce Freeman of Lindsay, Okla., driving a '07
Cobalt qualified in first with a time of 7.750 seconds.  Freeman was
able to edge passed Lafayette, Ind., resident Brian Browell.  

John Coughlin of Delaware, Ohio, grabbed the early lead qualifying on
top in Super Stock over Mt. Carmel, Ill., resident Kevin Murphy.
Coughlin ran a pass of 8.752 seconds in his '07 Cobalt, while Murphy
drove a '88 Cutlass.

            Stock Eliminator racer and Charleston, Ill., resident Bert
Morgan found the first position passing Tony Goodman of Zeeland, Mich.
Morgan ran a time of 13.416 seconds and drove a '76 Buick Wagon.

            In the Spitzer Top Dragster division, Tom Elliott of Brooks,
Ky., showed what he can do qualifying ahead of the field with a pass of
6.444 seconds at 210.28 mph.  Cassie Simonton of Spring Lake Park,
Minn., qualified next with a time of 6.806 seconds at 197.94 mph.

            Greg Lair of Canyon Texas took the No. 1 position in the
Dart Top Sportsman category running a pass of 6.732 seconds at 206.73
mph.  Lair edged out Napierville, Ill., racer Bill Lueck who qualified
in second.  Also qualifying in the top position was Pro Stock Snowmobile
pilot Dave Goodwill of West St. Paul, Minn., with a pass of 8.537
seconds.

            Gates open on Saturday at 7 a.m. Tickets are $19 for adults
