Densham must wait another week for tide to turn
CHICAGO (June 10) - Funny Car driver Gary Densham continues to hold his head up high despite disappointing results during Sunday’s final eliminations at the Torco Racing Fuels Route 66 NHRA Nationals.
Densham, who qualified tenth in his Torco Racing Fuels/Racebricks Collectibles Impala SS, found out the hard way that a small, over the counter item couldn’t hold up to the 8,000 hp engine. Densham smoked the tires just a few feet from the starting line, while his opponent Cruz Pedregon cruised the quarter-mile in 4.785-seconds to get the win light.
“We had such high hopes today,?? Densham said. “Our car was among the best out there but a $18 part prevented us from showing everybody how good we really are.
“The pilot bearing exploded at the hit of the throttle and took out all of the fingers in the clutch. That malfunction created an immediate loss of traction, so all we could do at that point was to shut it down and coast to the stripe.??
Densham felt that this was his team’s weekend to impress.
“We made a 4.873-second pass in the heat of the day Saturday when most of the rest of the cars couldn’t make it past half-track before smoking the tires,?? Densham said. “Friday night we made a 4.785-second run at 321-mph that put us in the middle of the field of 16. I think that shows that we have what it takes to win.
“Evan Knoll with Torco Racing Fuels sponsored this event and we so wanted to give him a win here, but it just wasn’t meant to be. The team is going to take a day or two off, do a little tweaking on those new Impala bodies and then get ready for next weekend’s event and, hopefully, have better luck.??
