Anderson, Line denied King Demon Crown
JOLIET, Ill. (June 9, 2007) – This year’s 23rd running of the NHRA King
Demon Crown, a special race-within-a-race event for Pro Stock drivers run
today in conjunction with the 10th annual NHRA Torco Racing Fuels Route 66
Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill., is now in the history books.
Greg Anderson, driver of the KB Racing LLC, Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac
lost to Kurt Johnson in the semifinals, while Jason Line, in an identical
looking Summit Racing Equipment Pontiac to Anderson, was turned back in the
opening round by Greg Stanfield.
For the first time in the last five King Demon Crown events a KB Racing LLC,
Summit Racing Pontiac is not in the final round.
“Both Jason and I came into this King Demon Crown race with what we thought
was a winning package,” said Anderson, following his and Jason’s exit from
the King Demon Crown. “We made great runs yesterday. Obviously, the
conditions changed today and we didn’t change with it. The track was hot
and sticky. Simply, we just made the wrong adjustments.
“Jason’s car was a little bit better than mine today, but neither one of us
was on the top of our game when it came to driving today. The King Demon
deal is behind us and we now concentrating on the race and the points.
We’ll review all our data from yesterday and today and hopefully make the
right adjustments for the race.”
Racers accrued points based on their qualifying position at each of the 22
national events contested preceding this year’s King Demon Crown event. A
No. 1 qualifying effort is worth 175 points, dropping 10 points per position
through No. 4, which is worth 145 points. The No. 5 qualifier is awarded 140
points, dropping 5 points per position down to No. 16, which is worth 85
points. Drivers who do not qualify for an event do not earn points at that
race.
The KB Racing duo of Anderson and Line collected 17 of the 22 available No.
1 qualifying spots during the 22-race qualifying span for the King Demon
Crown Three-time NHRA POWERade Pro Stock champion Anderson, who won the
King Demon Crown last year and in 2004 and was runner-up in 2003, collected
11 No. 1s during the qualifying span. Reigning NHRA POWERade Pro Stock
champion Line, with six No. 1s during the qualifying span, was runner-up for
the Crown in 2006 and 2005.
In addition to Anderson (No. 1 qualifier) and Line (No. 2), the following
drivers earned their way into the eight-car field for the King Demon Crown:
Allen Johnson (No. 3), Dave Connolly (No. 4), Kurt Johnson (No. 5), Mike
Edwards (No. 6), Greg Stanfield (No. 7), and V. Gaines (No. 8).
Opening round winners were: Anderson: 6.667/207.82 (over V. Gaines: red
light - 6.655/207.75), Stanfield: 6.691/206.32 (over Jason Line:
6.650/208.75), Allen Johnson: 6.658/207.43 (over Mike Edwards: 6.695/206.45)
and Kurt Johnson: 6.712/207.11 (over Dave Connolly: 6.700/206.39).
In the semifinals the winners were: Kurt Johnson: 6.672/206.86 (over
Anderson: 6.677/207.21) and Stanfield: 6.693/206.54 (over Allen Johnson:
8.213/114.31).
The final round saw Kurt Johnson (6.692/207.15) turn back Greg Stanfield
(6.729/206.26) for his fourth King Demon Crown.
With a total purse of $145,000 and a race payout of $76,000, the winner (K.
Johnson) of this year’s King Demon Crown receives $50,000, while the
runner-up (Stanfield) takes home $10,000. The two semifinalists (Anderson
and A. Johnson) walk away with $3,000 each and the four fist-round finishers
(V. Gaines, Jason Line, Mike Edwards, and Dave Connolly) each earn $2,500.
Additionally, the low qualifier at each of the 22 qualifying events earns
$3,000 (a total of $66, 000).
If Kurt Johnson wins the Pro Stock event title tomorrow, he will collect
$20,000 for winning the race and a NHRA bonus of $25,000 for winning both
the King Demon Crown and the 10th annual NHRA Torco Racing Fuels Route 66
Nationals, a total payout of $95,000.
