The competition, which is sponsored by General Motors and the U.S. Department of Energy, asked students throughout the U.S. to re-engineer a crossover sport utility vehicle that minimizes energy consumption, emissions and greenhouse gases. Simultaneously the vehicle must also maintain or exceed the vehicle’s utility and performance records.

While the top three winners of the competition will receive more than $90,000 in cash, GM officials say other participants were also rewarded. Currently GM officials report they have hired more than 40 of the competition’s students, and plan to make up to a dozen additional offers.
