TEAM NOTES (FORT WORTH) - TARGET INDYCAR TEAM TEXAS QUALIFYING REPORT

THIS WEEKEND: Target Team IndyCar drivers Scott Dixon (No.9 Target Honda-powered Dallara) and Dan Wheldon (No.10 Target Honda-powered Dallara) will take on the high-banked 1.5 mile super speedway at Texas Motor Speedway for 228 laps (342 miles/550 kilometers) this Saturday night. The Bombardier Learjet 550K is the 7th race in 17-race 2006 season. Scott Dixon and the no. 9 car crew will trade in the traditional red and white for the blue and white colours of team sponsor, Commit.

VENUE: Texas Motor Speedway 1.5 mile asphalt oval with 24-degree banked turns has produced some of the close racing that has been the hallmark of the IndyCar Series over the last 10 seasons.

QUALIFYING NOTES: After an unfortunate rear suspension failure and subsequent contact with the wall during practice this afternoon, Scott Dixon was forced to trade in the damaged no.9 Commit car for the No.9 Target backup car for his qualifying run. During that run, the left side rear mirror fell off but Dixon was still able to qualify seventh for the Saturday night race with a speed of 212.980 mph. Dan Wheldon qualified tenth with a speed of 212.665 mph.

THE (Championship) RACE IS ON! After six race races, Wheldon retains his second place spot in the Championship with 218 points following a third place result at Milwaukee. Dixon, who finished on the heels of his Target teammate in fourth place, also remains close behind in the IndyCar Series title hunt in third spot with 216 points. 2007 Indianapolis 500 winner Dario Franchitti takes over the lead in the driver standings thanks to a second place result at Milwaukee giving him the Championship lead with 221 points, just 3 points over the Target team.

WE’VE GOT A STREAKER! Scott Dixon has been running at the finish of 22 consecutive races and is the only IndyCar driver to have completed every lap this season to date.

TEXAS REVISITED: Last year, Dixon equaled his best finish at Texas, finishing just 0.2402 of a second behind race-winner Helio Castroneves. After taking the lead three times for a total of 171 laps (of 200), Wheldon had a small set back in the pits and finished the race third.

-Dixon’s best qualifying position at Texas was in second in both 2003 & 2006 when he started and finish second in both races.

-Dixon’s best finish at Texas was second place. He did it twice (2003 to win the Championship & 2006)

-Wheldon’s best finish at Texas was third (2004 & 2006).

-The last time the Target Team had the pole in Texas was in 2003 (day race) with Tomas Scheckter

-The last time the Target team won at Texas was 2002 with Jeff Ward as he edged Al Unser, Jr. by .011 of a second in what was at the time, the closest finish in IRL history.

A LOOK IN THE REAR VIEW MIRROR: The Target team has two wins, a pole position and four runner-up finishes, and ten top-fives this season to date. Dan Wheldon earned the pole in Homestead and took the top spot in both Homestead-Miami and Kansas this season. Scott Dixon finished second in Homestead-Miami, on the streets of St. Petersburg and the Indianapolis 500.

TARGET CHIP GANASSI RACING QUOTEBOARD:

Scott Dixon: “It was alright. The car setup has been pretty good and for the short amount of time the Target guys with Commit did a good job getting a car ready in a couple of hours. We had a suspension failure there going into (Turn) 1 in practice, and seem to wreck that car pretty good. We only got one lap because we missed our turn in line, but all in all, it was pretty good.

Dan Wheldon: “Not too bad. We seem to lack a little bit of speed. Everybody at Target Chip Ganassi Racing has been working hard to figure out why.”
