LUCAS UPBEAT DESPITE FIRST ROUND LOSS
TOPEKA (June 3) – Morgan Lucas was a little bit more upbeat than usual despite a first round loss at the 19th annual O’Reilly Summer Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka. After making the race in the No. 8 qualified position, he faced David Grubnic hoping to even the score, since this was the pair’s 12th time meeting with Grubnic holding the slight edge with six wins to Lucas’ five.
Only this time, Grubnic lengthened his lead over the Brownsburg, Ind.-resident in a tire smoking, pedaling contest that left Lucas coasting to the finish line. Both cars spun the tires resulting in a loss of traction around 100 feet out and for a moment a hush silence came over HPT as both cars waited just a moment leaving fans wondering who would be the first to react.
As Lucas was attempting to make his way down the track just easing back into the throttle to recover, suddenly an upper engine flash appeared out of his Lucas Oil dragster’s engine leaving his powerless. Grubnic push gently on his throttle completing the run defeating Lucas with a time of 6.028 seconds, 244.25 mph to Morgan’s run of 10.153 seconds, 67.59 mph.
Lucas remains in 16th place in the NHRA POWERade points standings with 236 points.
The next NHRA National event will be the 10th annual Torco Racing Fuels Nationals at the beautiful Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill. on June 8 – 10.
